Taunton August 8 Herbert Willis 19 son of S B Willis fish dealer was arrested on murder charges in the June 22 slaying of Fred M Strange. Four officers faced armed resistance as Willis tried to fire and bit Officer Briggs. Police also found a bicycle stolen in Providence during the arrest.
In Boston on August 7 the Senators benefited from a weak 8th inning by the home club, scoring four runs aided by infield errors. Stivetts pitched well early but faltered in the 2nd, Washington tallied, Sullivan relieved, Demontreville drove in two with a single. Final score Washington 4, Boston 8 with 10 hits to 5.
Fire in the Gardiner and Wilmington coal mine at Clark City in the Braidwood district traps fifteen miners. Of forty at work, twenty-five escape before the upper entrance is cut off. Clark City, a 600 resident town with a large Italian community, reports the incident.
In Baltimore the Orioles defeated the New York team 16 to 1. In Cleveland the game between Pittsburg and Cleveland was 3 to 3 after 11 innings and halted due to darkness. Philadelphia and Brooklyn were tied 0 to 0 when rain stopped play after two innings.
In Brockton New Ded ford faced a 9 to 8 loss after a player named Doe was fined and ordered out. Portland hosted Bangor with Bangor winning 7 to 3. Pawtucket beat Fall River 9 to 4. Augusta led Lewiston 12 to ? in Lewiston.
Narragansett Pier August 8 Irving Weeks, jailed for robery of a breast pin, admits involvement in a July $25,000 diamond robbery. He identifies Benton as the man who took the diamonds and sold them to Lucas in Newport.
In Chicago on August 8 J W Carron the champion Australian bicycle rider debuted in the United States at the Coliseum. Racing a 4 1 2 mile track he completed a mile in 2 0 1 2 5 setting a new record while J Eaton of Philadelphia rode a mile unpaced in 2 0 7.
In Syracuse Wilkes Barre beat Syracuse 2 0. Rochester defeated Scranton 7 2, and Scranton won 14 4 in the rematch. Providence topped Buffalo 2 6, while Toronto routed Springfield 17 0.
Salt Lake City reports Charles Thilde was hanged in the rail yard yesterday for the murder of his wife on April 30, 1894. Thilde, a saloon keeper, protested his innocence as the second execution in the state's history.
Chicago Aug. 7 The Times-Herald reports a fight between Gov. Altgeld and Democratic national committee chair Jones. The New York session of the committee begins Aug. 11. Altgeld will be represented. Jones may retreat from positions. Western leaders may force Jones to abdicate command. The dispute stems from Sewall-Watson issues and St Louis matters. Sharp correspondence has occurred. conferences were planned in Springfield or Chicago.
Natchez Mississippi reports a severe storm between Natchez and Jackson that crippled telegraph lines. No rain since June 23 raises concerns that the cotton crop in Concordia parish is irreparably damaged.
State Highway Commissioners Mc Clintock and Mendenhall led a Lawrence special committee along the planned highway from Haverhill to Lawrence then Groveland and Bradford. The party reviewed routes, dined in Haverhill, and returned by the south river route. Methuen officials urged Hast street to be included.
Daniel J. Donahue, a prominent local lawyer, denies reports he will seek the Democratic nomination for Congress. He says he would not consider running and has all he can handle with his present duties.
The Lowell Machine shop reduced its staff with fifty sent out last night from the foundry, swelling idle workers to about 120. Remaining foundry employees will work 40 hours weekly, eight hours daily from 7 am to 4 pm, five days a week.

The department had expanded by June 4 to over 225 staff to combat moth outbreaks, but ongoing funding reductions threaten continued pest control efforts and containment of colonies across affected areas.

Miss Arabella A Cadman daughter of Nathan P and Martha A Cadman died after a brief illness at her Chelmsford home aged 51. She was respected for quiet helpfulness in village life and parish work. Surviving relatives include sister Martha E and brother Girard P Cadman Lowell city clerk. Funeral Monday at 3 PM at the family home conducted by Rev Granville Pierce Unitarian pastor. Annie C Judkins died August 7 at 22 West Bowers Street aged 28 years 5 months 11 days.
