Boston August 7 The legislative committee appointed to revise the public statutes ran a payroll of 6200 for the first month. Members reported days from 1.5 to 24, paid at 7.50 daily, with many days short but others lengthy. The 51 member panel spanned debates on language for Civil War widow and orphans benefits and adjourned to next Tuesday.
Nahant August 7. Selectmen ban moonlight steamboat excursions for the rest of the summer after several parties from Boston and other places caused drunkenness street fights and disturbances. Police had to summon Boston officers to quell crowds at arrivals. Complaints from residents and storekeepers prompted the vote.

Cleveland Aug 7 The steel strike ordered will have little immediate impact in Cleveland. Efforts to withdraw workers in the steel trust mill failed, though several hundred in steel and tin plate plants may comply with last night's order.
Washington reports the navy department ordered the gunboat Machias, then at Boston, to sail to Hampton Roads and then to Colon to protect American interests amid reported revolutionary disturbances and traffic disruption at the Isthmus.
The funeral of Episcopal Bishop Abram Newkirk Littlejohn of Long Island was conducted at the Cathedral of the Incarnation Garden City. After the holy Eucharist, Bishop Potter of New York read the funeral services.
London officials report the House of Commons adopted a condolence resolution for King Edward and Emperor William. King Edward and Queen Alexandra plan to travel to Hamburg Friday for Empress Frederick's funeral, with official attendance noted locally.
In Philadelphia on August 7 authorities reported no new bodies found in the debris of Monday night’s blast. The death toll stands at seven with all remaining injured persons reported living.
London August 7 The Exchange Telegraph reports Andrew Carnegie has been invited to become lord rector of Aberdeen University.
Berlin August 7. It is definite that the Dowager Empress Frederick will be buried next Tuesday. The funeral date has been fixed and confirmed by officials.
Supt. Avery Marshall of the commons department announces cancellation of the North Common band concert for this evening. The postponed date will be announced later.
In Groton yesterday, 67 year old John Salter, a noted local figure, was killed instantly while descending a hill on a bicycle in New London. Police said the accident occurred on a hill road and an investigation is underway to determine the cause. Salter was known for community service and had long been associated with local charities and clubs.
A granite quarry man died instantly after being struck by a cart during a collision. He was a 32d degree Mason and had long worked in the granite industry.
Boston officials refuse to provide city polling places for prohibition caucuses. The election board cites state law requiring city aid only for a political party meeting a governor vote threshold. Secretary Palmer accepts the ruling and the prohibitionists will hold caucuses at their own expense.

Walpole may gain a public library building fund of 15000 dollars from Andrew Carnegie if the town donates a site and allocates 1500 dollars yearly for library support. The town already raises comparable sums and a local donor may provide a suitable lot. The library holds 10000 volumes and a 5000 dollar endowment from Hon. F. W. Bird. The proposal will be considered at a general meeting ahead of a special town meeting.

Newport IL August 7 The city council approved use of Ocean drive by the National Automobile Racing Association led by William K Vanderbilt Jr for races on August 30 or the next fair day. Protests from Prof Agassiz Samuel Huntington and Theodore H Davis prompted strict conditions, including signing damage assurances and flagging 41 road crossings to warn approaching drivers.
Bliss and Councilmen F A Ward and Dennis Shannahan were appointed to supervise the races and ensure compliance with conditions. Vanderbilt invites owners of speedy cars to meet his flyer Red Devil. Races planned for all classes with valuable cups donated by Vanderbilt Belmont Oelrichs and spouses and other trophies to be offered.
Pierre Framand a young man seeking work and employment with Charles E. Paille was arrested after a $106 pocketbook disappeared following a drive. Framand confessed to spending all the money and was ordered held for the grand jury in $400 as Judge Pickman charged. The report notes other local minor sentences in police court.
Mayor Dimon calls a special meeting of the aldermen for tonight to read his planned veto of loan resolutions. He may veto baths and paving loans while suggesting approval of a limited paving loan. The council reaction remains uncertain. Visitors to the mayor were many yesterday, with several lingering past the usual visiting hours.
Boston, Aug. 7. Commissioners under a supreme court decree filed a five year apportionment for north metropolitan sewerage costs including interest, sinking fund, and operation. Judge Hammond will approve the plan when all towns assent. Lexington Wakefield exemptions contested. board asserts district-wide benefits justify partial assessments.

A foreman driving era Smith's carriage struck a street hole on Church Street during paving work. The top was crushed, the horse panicked and began to bolt for about 50 yards before the driver regained control by holding the reins. No one is reported injured.
In Amesbury on Aug 7 Charles Usher of Lynn 18 died while attempting to save Busiel Smith 8 of Philadelphia from drowning in the Merrimack River. Both boys pupils at a local school run by Mrs. Caroline W. Proctor. Smith climbed into a boat and fell overboard. Usher jumped in to assist but could not keep him afloat. Both bodies were recovered.
The American Mason Safety Tread Co has signed a $5600 contract to manufacture and install a large sidewalk vault light for the Deseret News building in Salt Lake City. The firm’s safety treads are used in Boston’s Colonial building, Philadelphia’s Masonia temple, the New York and Chicago elevated railways, and the Washington government printing office, with extensive orders for schools, depots, and sidewalks.
A Belgrade despatch says the US news agency claim of sixteen killed and nineteen wounded during Prokuplje elections is false. The elections reportedly proceeded with little disturbance and no such fatalities or injuries were recorded.
Mrs Mary Shields, aged 56, who suffered a serious accident at her Dra cut home last Sunday, is reported resting comfortably. The case remains grave due to her age and condition.
