In Chicago on August 5, 2500 workers at the shipbuilding company faced a two phase walkout. 300 riveters began the strike over a wage drop from 1.50 to 1.25 dollars daily, followed by 1100 sympathizers. Closures ensued. labor groups' approval remains uncertain.
In Syracuse, Syracuse defeated Providence 7 to 2 while Toronto beat Scranton 10 to 5. Rochester shut out Springfield 7 to 4 and Buffalo prevailed over Wilkes-Barre 9 to 6. In the New England League Fall River edged New Bedford 6 to 4 and Augusta and Bangor played to a 2 2 tie in 10 innings before darkness halted play.
In the Royal squadron yacht race at Cowes on August 5, the Ailsa sailed the course cleanly and won both prizes of £100 and £50 for yachts 65 line rating. Britannia Satanita and Caress went wrong side of the mark boat, Meteor lost bowsprit, leaving Meteor and the others unable to place ahead of Ailsa.

The trial of Bob Thompson for killing his opponent Carter in a prize fight resumed before Judge Wanger. A motion to dismiss was overruled and bail set at 2500 dollars. The case against the referee and the club will be pursued next.
In the Supreme Judicial court on Tuesday Judge Knowlton appointed Jasper W. Stone and S T Harris as administrators of Amos Stone of Everett. Stone a longtime Middlesex county figure and former county treasurer was believed to be wealthy. Several suits were filed before his death. counsel stated the estate is insolvent, though others dispute this, leaving an estate of insignificant proportions.
Guthrie Oklahoma August 5 A posse pursues the outlaw Bill Doolin who escaped from the penitentiary weeks ago near Wewoka. A gunfight ensues and Doolin escapes. Deputies T M Gregor and Hollis Reynolds are killed in the clash.
Ex Senator John J. Ingalls spoke to Lyons voters outlining his canvass for senator. He endorsed the Republican platform and urged support for McKinley and Hobart in the upcoming election.
Boston and Albany railroad reports for the quarter ended June show gross earnings of 2,340,882 versus 2,228,315 a year ago. Net earnings decline to 471,457 from 528,737 last year.
Lisbon Aug 5 reports a renewed rumor that Great Britain recognizes Brazil's sovereignty over the island of Trinidad off Brazil. The same rumor circulated last February and was contradicted.
Newburyport reports that George Looney, 40, who was arrested last night on delirium tremens charges, was found hanging by his neck tie to a cell door this morning. He was unmarried and pronounced dead.
The Boston and Maine railroad has awarded the contract for building out houses at Concord New Hampshire to Mead Mason and Co of Manchester New Hampshire.
Richard P. Bland was nominated for Congress by the Democrats of the St. Louis district on Tuesday by acclamation. Bland was not present, having gone to visit Mr. Bryan.
The annual Ho for the Beach picnic attracted over 600 people to Lynn beach this morning. Excursionists began at 6 30 with half hour electric car service through 9 30. Three special trains from Middlesex street depot carried about 750 people, two crowded early runs and a smaller late departure at 11.

Four deaths occurred in Boston between 4 and 8 pm on Tuesday. William O Connell age 33 of 9 Billerica Street died after a derrick pulley block struck his skull at Sudbury Street. Samuel Weinstein age 5 perished when struck by an electric vehicle near Leverett Street. Mrs Clara S Moore died from injuries after a fall from a second story window at 309 Tremont Street. William Flannery age 7 drowned after a fall from the Union Boat Club front.
George Jackson, an employee of Charles Clapp, was thrown from a team on Prince street near the Merrimack mill gate. The wagon wheel injured his chest. he declined hospital at first, then returned complaint of chest pains and was admitted to the corporation hospital, where he is reported as improving.
Willie O'Neil aged 9 drowned Tuesday afternoon at Foster's mill in Manchester after getting beyond his depth while swimming with companions. The incident prompted rescue efforts but ended in his death.

In the Pickman Police Court on August 5 Thomas E Greenhalge, overheated and weary, was tried for drunkenness and larceny after Miss Ethel D Stevens identified a pocket book found in his possession. Stevens testified she lost the purse July 18 and a small sum was inside. Greenhalge claimed he found the item and was fined $10.
Philip J. Farley and Frank J. Simonds visited North Billerica to mobilize Democrats and undermine the Democratic machine. The town hall was locked so Farley spoke at the hay scales under a willow canopy, then at the fire department engine house. A new town committee was chosen with Harrigan as president and Connolly as secretary, binding the party after Salmagundi Simonds and Edward McMahon spoke.
Out of town visitors from Boston Waltham Methuen and other places joined Lowell Water Board members to inspect the driven wells on the boulevard. The contract promised 2 000 000 to 3 000 000 gallons daily but yielded 4 500 000, with payment terms of 13 000 per million and 10 additional per million. Aldermen Dow and Howe were named to represent the board as Fleming joined the session at 8 30. Bonds for several police department members were filed with city solicitor approval. The resolution passed without opposition after minor licenses were granted and the meeting adjourned.

The Ladies Benevolent Society of the First Congregational church filled vacancies created by withdrawals to the First Trinitarian church. New officers are President Mrs. Flora Dunlap, Vice President Mrs. Colby, Secretary and Treasurer Mrs. George E. Bell. Working committees were chosen and a sociable is planned for September.
