In Des Moines on August 4 a Sunday night conference of Democrats and Populists reached a fusion plan. The arrangement assigns two state ticket posts, three electoral posts to Populists, one elector to the bimetallists, and the Democrats take the remaining positions.
Lawrence Cummings, who killed his wife Elizabeth and attempted to kill his daughter June 12, 1895, took his own life in the county jail at 12:45 this morning by shooting himself with a revolver he had obtained.

Wampanoag remains shut fifth week for repairs. Merchants and others begin second two week curtailment. Merchants already four weeks down.
A serious fire on Washington Street Haverhill within a four story brick block owned by Jesse Newcomb caused heavy losses. The top flat occupied by J J Brimblecom suffered complete stock loss about 1000 dollars. Elmer Murray and Fred Brooks on the next floor sustained about 500 dollars damage each. Water damage to D A Pettingill and C L Hoyt each about 500 dollars. Tolman and Wallaces cigar store on the street floor damaged by water about 500 dollars. The origin is unknown and Fred Sweet was injured. All losses insured.
James H Mansfield posing as a physician faced a Lawrence Police court filing for grand larceny. He toured with an Indian show and medicines, hiring horses and equipment from Stevens’s livery. A Lowell tip linked a Graniteville sale, Stevens identified the goods, Mansfield was arrested in Manchester New Hampshire and held for the grand jury in 1000 dollar bonds.
At Nashua 80 men on the Worcester and Nashua division of the Boston and Maine railroad were discharged after refusing to return to work in Sterling where they had been sent to lay steel rails. They cited rain and Sunday work as the cause. About 200 men appeared to fill the vacancies.

Harold McDonna, aged 25, was sentenced in the superior criminal court to the Concord reformatory for habitual intoxication. McDonna's career included the Boston Museum company, Lothrop's stock company, a dramatics school principal, and a bicycle sales job.
The 11th annual American Federation of Labor convention met at Forester Hall Worcester with J D Pierce chairing and W H Lord named secretary. The session approved pushes for shorter public employe hours and curb contract labor, pr oduction of prison goods, and raising school age to 16, while endorsing eight hour laws and barring politics from union deliberations. A Boston theft arrest followed, Mary Cook of Lowell accused of shoplifting at Houghton Dutton Boston store.
Joseph Ludlam of the Merrimack Manufacturing Company died at his Andover Street home at 2:30 am after seven weeks of illness. Born 1838 in Cape May NJ, he sailed widely, served with Chinese forces during the Tai Ping rebellion, and later led the Lowell Merrimack mill as agent. He leaves a wife, two daughters, and a son Gordon.

A farewell reception honored Rev W W Harris of the Paige Street church last evening as friends gathered to bid him farewell and wish success in his new field in Somersworth New Hampshire. Eight little girls presented five dollar gold pieces with speeches, while the vestry received bunting and flowers and refreshments and music complemented the event. Harris plans a vacation at Ocean Park before starting his new pastorate in September.
Marcel Hebert a machinist at Tremont and Suffolk had the centre toe of his right foot crushed when a heavy gear slipped and fell. Hebert, of 5 Gage Street, was taken to Lowell Hospital by ambulance and will not lose the toe.
At City Hall committees met to approve bills and discuss street and school matters. The Varnum School addition was approved to be built on the front, financed from school house funds. The Moody Street bridge bill and other paving bids were settled, while Parker Street plans faced opposition and were dropped. A road scraper demonstration was set for Wednesday to test its merit.
