In San Francisco on April 30 Marjorie the fast Iroquois filly was scratched after wheezing and a sponge was found in her nostrils. Officials checked nearby horse Decision and found a sponge in his nose as well. In Malone New York the Farmers Advocate is placed in receivership by Judge Kellogg. W N W Robbins appointed receiver. The paper, started nearly five years ago, will continue as an independent organ.
In Chicago on April 30 the Bridge and Structural Iron union demanded a seven cent per hour raise. If denied, a strike will follow threatening 700 workers with layoffs and stoppage of work on three elevated road projects under construction.
Milwaukee Electric railroad employees voted to demand 21 cents an hour. A strike seems unlikely, and a compromise of 20 cents an hour could be considered. Local officials anticipate negotiations rather than work stoppage.
Philadelphia on April 30 reports the Union Traction strike ordered by the Amalgamated Association central committee collapsed as workers did not quit. Also, Hamilton Disston, prominent Philadelphia delegate to the St. Louis convention, died this morning at the Tenth National Bank.
Rain has fallen continuously for 24 hours in Oconto Wisconsin flooding all lowlands and driving water levels in the river to the highest in years.
James Mitchell longtime chairman of the New York Stock Exchange died suddenly this morning in New York of heart failure. The death halves a prominent figure in finance with years of service at the exchange. He led trading floors and shaped market operations during his tenure.
In Suncook New Hampshire on April 80 the body of a boy named Lynch who drowned on April 15 was recovered from the canal rack at Pembroke mills.
London April 30 a blast at Micklefield Yorkshire this morning reportedly killed or injured about one hundred people. Rescue crews work through the wreckage as authorities investigate the blast and its cause.
Mitchell S D reports Epiphany wiped out by cyclone last night with no standing houses. Three people fatally injured and fifteen others hurt. Wide flooding and lightning struck Illinois and Iowa towns including Omaha and Dubuque. heavy rain disrupted travel and wires.
The Epworth league of the Central M. E. church held a social at George E. Maker's home on Seventh street. Rev. C. M. Hall delivered an illustrated lecture on Washington with a musical program. Refreshments followed.
In Springfield on April 29 the state convention of women opened with about 75 delegates present of 345 allotted. Mrs. A. A. Abbott chaired as delegates bickered over credentials and parliamentary rules while Miss H. F. Carrier of Jacksonville was named for university trustee by the Republican state convention.
London April 29 The sentencing of the Johannes burg reform committee leaders sparked further outrage as commutations and Krueger's reply to Chamberlain prompt calls for strong measures. Editorials warn Britain will not permit Krueger to endanger British lives and suggest German influence aims to provoke a Boer war scenario. T P O Connors in the Sun argues Germans have landed 600 to 700 trained troops in the Transvaal to incite conflict and drag Britain into a grave war.
Cape Town April 29 relief column from Salisbury led by Cecil Rhodes is now expected to reach Gwelo in about a week after a minor clash near Bulawayo at Coolie Gardens. A Matabele reconnoitering party fired on a picket, five natives were killed, and Matabele forces retreated as a seven pounder was positioned to command the gardens. Matabeles urge tribes to rise and exterminate whites while signaling they have beaten whites in every engagement.
Detroit April 29 sound money won a complete victory at the Michigan democratic state convention by a narrow margin. The administration men secured organization and adopted their resolutions and elected all delegates and alternates. The free silver faction faced defeat and there is little bolt talk. They count on the July national convention and embrace patriotism, condemn the A P A and similar groups. The minority silver ticket was tabled.
At a Westminster Presbyterian meeting Mr. H G Walker and Mr John McKinnon were appointed to attend the Cambridge Presbytery session. They will urge Rev Dr Campbell's resignation be accepted so he may become pastor of a Wooster Ohio church.
State legislative subcommittees on redistricting reported plans to split Middlesex and Essex districts. The outline assigns Lowell Cambridge and rural districts across wards, with a broad Middlesex Essex mix and a cross county district from Medford to Marlboro. Objections cited include Chelmsford and Billerica separation over political disagreements.
Fred Sweetser, a rural newcomer, was swindled of $5 by a gentlemanly stranger in Branch street who promised work if he bought a blue uniform with brass buttons and a matching cap. The man left to “pay a bill” at a livery stable and never returned, leaving Sweetser unaware of the stable’s location.

At Cambridge yesterday the case of Carney versus Sherburne in reference to the old city hail lot was finished. The court refused to grant the injunction and dismissed the bill. The Lowell Institution for Savings sought to restrain Warren Sherburne, owner of the old city hall building, from building an addition on the westerly end.
A wagon load of slates was delivered to City Hall and stored in the school department supply room. After the School Board abolished slates in favor of paper, some pupils returned to slates by preference, so the temptation was removed today.
An informal application by Mrs Greenhalge for appointment as administratrix of the late Governor's estate lacked a guardian arrangement for the minor children. The matter was postponed in probate court to allow correction of the oversight.

A pair of bay horses aged five years and weighing 1200 pounds each have been purchased for the Board of Health of Co Hanson. The price if the horses are accepted is 225 dollars.
A large crowd attended Huntington hall for the Day Nursery Festival bazaar, opening with a dramatic gatling gun display and a camp scene. Cadets from Co D and Co C staged musketry and a gun duel, Ambulance Corps tended the wounded, and a field hospital was shown. Afterward, lemonade and flowers funded the event as dancing followed and preparations began for tonight's production of King Pippa. The operetta features nearly a hundred children and Mrs Julian Talbot as author.
