At a breakfast in Mrs Hashcroft’s boarding house a landlady recounts a Detroit Free Press piece by a famed scientist claiming coffee drinking enslaves its followers like liquor. The star boarder jokes about substitutes used in boarding houses and asks about their effects on the human system.

Jefferson City Missouri April 29 The defense lawyers of Bill Taylor sought a stay from Governor Stone but he refused to intervene. Court officials expect the death sentence to be carried out Thursday with little chance of reprieve.
Secretary of State Olney received a despatch announcing that the death sentence on John Hays Hammond in the Transvaal has been commuted.
In Nashua on April 29 the Supreme court resumed with Judge Wallace presiding. Four and a half hours were needed to select a jury for the Dr. J. C. Moore case.
In St. Louis on April 29 Charles Kuhn a real estate man who vanished ten days ago remains missing with his whereabouts concealed. His financial records show an estimated shortfall of about 137000 dollars amid the mystery surrounding his disappearance.

Shepard Russell and Co sold the Knowles estate of about 47000 square feet at Pawtucket and Fletcher streets to F. E. Dunbar. The price was not disclosed. It is said Dunbar bought for the Tremont and Suffolk mills and the corporation plans a new residence for Agent Thomas.
Miss Amy Baker, noted elocutionist, staged her annual recital at Sherry's yesterday afternoon. The program featured miscellaneous readings and an amusing bicycle sketch full of timely hits, drawing a large fashionable audience.
Superintendent Oliver begins flower beds in Fort Hill park and paints the settees. The park welcomes visitors as a large bed of pansies blooms for the first time at Var num park today.
Patrick Cannon aged 60 died April 28 at his home 16 Sargent street after forty years in Lowell. A veteran of the late war, he leaves one daughter in California and three sons.
Deposits in the savings department at Traders National Bank locations 30 Middlesex Street and 11 Post Office Avenue must be on or before Saturday May 2 at 9 pm to earn four percent interest from May 1. A cantata titled The Voices of Nature directed by Miss Florence Blood at Odd Fellows hall last night raised funds for Faith Home. Readings by Miss Bessie Adams drew encores while Mr W E Bagshaw and Miss Blanche Whicher gave well received singing. A mandolin club and several participants including Amy Wasley as pianist and Amy Wasley as accompanist performed. the program featured many performers led by Florence Gelifio and Clinton Cou lam.

Hon C D Palmer served as interlocutor for the Vesper Country club debuting in the comic opera Howahya before a fashionable audience at the Alabama Minstrels. Under stage direction by E R Buffington and musical leadership of Leo Munier the troupe practiced five weeks forming elaborate balcony scenes and chorus tableaux with soloists A M Burtt and H V Huse while Ex Mayor Palmer presided below.
