San Francisco April 24 Gov Gage announced the appointment of Dan Burns to the United States Senate to succeed Stephen H White. The action mirrors the prior Pennsylvania Quay appointment by Gov Stone and follows the same line of precedent.
Berlin reports a semi official note stating Secretary of State John Hay expressed strong disapproval of Captain Coghlan of the Raleigh to the German ambassador in Washington.
At midday today a large hog escaped from a farm wagon near the police station. It dropped over four feet from the wagon into the crowd causing a commotion as hundreds gathered to watch.
A dull thud on stone drew a crowd as a ground hog lay senseless then tried to escape making unearthly noises. Prisoners restrained it with ropes while several men hoisted the animal back into its enclosure. It is likely the first ground hog sighting this spring in the area.

Earle W. Fowler son of Mr and Mrs George L Fowler received a surprise farewell party from Middlesex Village friends on Saturday night. He has been appointed a cadet on the training ship Enterprise and leaves May 1 to begin duties. Walter Bowers presented him a kodak camera on behalf of the guests.
Special sale offers dozen fine neglige shirts at fifty cents a unit. Each shirt includes one attached cuff pair and two separate collars. Sales pitch promises customers can buy all they need and be satisfied.
A Lowell audience enjoyed a strong concert from the Orchestral Society yesterday, praised for refined playing and notable soloists Miss Maud Paradis and Miss Lucie A. Tucker. The program featured Mendelssohn G Minor Concerto, Flotow Stradella overture, Beyer Capriccietta, Meyerbeer Coronation March, and works by Woolf, Meyerbeer, and Masse. The accompanist was Mr. S. R. A busy morning session before Judge Hadley saw multiple drunkards arraigned. Several simple offenders were released or fined, while a group including Mary Hennessy and Patrick Curtin faced $5 penalties. Alice Sloss pled guilty to drunkenness after a suicide attempt in a liquor cell. Her husband, jailed earlier, was sent to the workhouse for one month. Peter Mojcik paid $5.60 for drunkenness, with 60 cents for interpreter expenses. Julia Doherty, 18, faced a third offense as she awaited the court's decision.
In the fifth week of the March Lowell superior court session the trial of Martin pro aml v Staples et al ended with a verdict for the plaintiff amounting to 450. Thomas Higgins, a Chelmsford born day laborer living at 305 Middlesex street, inherits 3500 dollars and a nine acre homestead from Mrs. L G Ross who died in Concord aged seventy. Higgins, aged 39, has two children Mary 21 who works in the city and a son serving a sentence at Westboro. He plans to use the money to clear his son's name and says the girl has been wronged.
James A Wing, a machinist residing at 166 Shaw Street and employed at the Lowell Machine Shop Foundry, suffered several fainting spells this morning at work and was conveyed by ambulance to the Corporation Hospital.

Seede, a recent high school graduate entering college. He was a Knights of Columbus member and earlier a noted Les Miserables bowling team member.
Edwin Lincoln Russell of Chelmsford died at his home from pneumonia after a five day illness. Born in Chelmsford 38 years ago on April 5, he managed Russell's Mills and an ice business, never married, with surviving brothers Frederick A and Edward Hamlin a sister Mrs Dora Gould and half sister Mrs Lizzie Newman. Funeral Wednesday at 2:30 from Frederick Russell’s Centre Village home. A second obituary notes Mrs Sarah A Hill died April 18, 1899 in Lowell with funeral held April 16 conducted by Rev Albert H. Thompson of Raymond N H.
Lucius E Howes a 75 year old resident of the city collapsed and died on Middlesex street near the Standard Bottling works this morning at about six o clock He was a paper hanger en route to work at the house of Charles Hill Grand street Despite Brights disease and heart trouble he left home in his usual health This morning he was attended by Dr Waller but died instantly He leaves a wife and one son in Iowa and was a member of Jackson lodge I O O F Iowa The body was examined by Dr J W Meigs who attributed the death to disease of the heart

John T. Seede age 50 years 8 months 29 days, 774 Central street, died April 22. Lucius E. Howes age 75 years 7 months 25 days, 416 School street, died April 24.
A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs E P Britton of 29 Grand Street in April.
