Amesbury April 21 The mother of Joseph R. Kelley was overcome by grief after learning of her son’s arrest and his confession of guilt in the Stickney murder. Her condition was reported as critical and seriously ill.
Philadelphia reports Billy Vernon collapsed in the 14th round against Leslie Pearce and is not expected to live. He remains unconscious this morning as Pearce and his seconds face arrest.
Mayor Courtney orders a full investigation into the incendiary fire at the Board of Health stables amid political tensions after recent reorganizations. Chief Hosmer and Fire Marshal Aid Stone traveled to Boston for inquiries, as three more old employees were dismissed by new yard head John F. Murphy, while Knapp of the Health Office insured horses and stock personally without city authorization.

A mysterious fire at the Board of Health stable near Cross and Common streets destroyed six horses last night. Smoke was seen at 7:45 pm, firemen fought the blaze, two horses suffocated, three consumed, the remaining horse was euthanized by Dr. Wiles. The cause is unknown. night watchman Patrick Mahon’s account is unclear. The building and hay were ruined. loss to the city is substantial. The incident occurred amid city council actions on July Fourth committee and sewer loan discussions.
The Common Council met in regular session and adopted resolutions transferring 45000 for new school houses borrowing 75000 for sewers and 50000 to buy the boulevard driven well plant. The meeting also sponsored sidewalk petitions committee appointments and memorial day funding with a contested amendment affecting naval veterans groups.

No arguments were made and the matter was left for the full bench. A written statement will be prepared for approval by lawyers, potentially addressing removal for partisan reasons. The probate matter on Mary C. McManus estate adjourned to Cambridge.
The High Street Church held a well attended first night of its spring festival to raise funds for repairs.
