In St. Joseph on April 20 Thomas Marshall, an inmate, escaped during supper, poured boiling water into a bath, then plunged in and died by scalding. The body showed severe burns with flesh sloughing from the bones.
Kalispel Mont April 20 A passenger train drawn by two engines struck a broken rail near Bear Creek yesterday. Both locomotives broke loose and tumbled down the mountain, one plunging 200 feet the other 60 feet. The engineers and firemen were fatally injured. The cars remained on the rails.
Philadelphia beat Boston 6 to 5 in the season opener after a tight finish. Lajoie homered, Tucker doubled, Delehanty and Hamilton stole bases, and Nichols outpitched Orth with 2 strikeouts more. Attendance reached 14 500 as Klobedanz and Nichols closed out the game for the visitors.
Burglars forced open the money drawer at Westford Station on Sunday night or Monday morning. They pried open a window to gain entry and stole about $20 in railroad money, $25 in American Express money, and $5 to $6 in stamps from the drawer.

In Hadley on April 20 Police Court records showed 30 drunks in the dock yesterday but none today except cases carried over. Thomas Fayton paid a $20 fine and posted $100 bond for six months to keep the peace after assault on Lillian Fayton. John Goodchild fined $15 for larceny, drunkenness dropped. Michael Golden sent to workhouse six months for drunkenness. William Millman fined $5 for similar offense. John Carroll withdrew appeal and was sent to the state farm for eighteenth.
About 150 ex-members gathered at the American House Boston for the Old Sixth Massachusetts reunion with Sec retary Sisson presiding. Notable guests included Mrs Lizzie R Rogers and Comrade Watson who recalled Baltimore in 1861 and the regiments role in the citys siege. The event featured a blue silk flag gift from Mrs Mary Shellman and a toastmaster address by Capt Caleb Saunders. The group elected officers for the coming year and voted to hold next year s meeting in Lowell.
The annual sachem election of the Tammany Society in the Columbian Order was held in New York on Monday. Thomas Reitner and Amos J. Cummings retired. Nathan Straus and George W. Plunkett replaced them. Straus is described as a strong gold man, with Hugh J. Grant J. B. Cram Henry D. Hotchkiss and John P. Patrick also on the board of thirteen, now nearly evenly split.
A 102 member Young People convention from 22 towns filled Fifth Street Baptist Church. Sessions opened with prayer and praise led by Haverhill pastor H E Chapman. Reports showed 19 of 22 churches contributing, 385 junior union members, 60 baptisms, and 1113 members in 1896 rising to 1296 in 1897. Miss Ella D Mac Laurin urged missions, stressing faith and giving beyond a tenth.
The Massachusetts Supreme Court, led by Justice Allen, convened in Lowell for its annual session and heard three quo warranto challenges over the offices of superintendent of streets, city solicitor, and city messenger. Hearings yielded no final rulings, with cases moved to a full bench for May 18, while other docket items included a mortgage case and an appeal from probate.
Sparks from the chimney at Alphonse Bibibeault's Perkins Street home in Little Canada started a small roof fire. Firefighters arrived after 7:30 am to find only a few shingles burning.

William E. Noyes and Lena M. Hunt were married in this city on April 14 in a ceremony conducted by Rev. Thomas Sayer Jr. The event united the couple in a formal church setting and marks a new union for their families.
In Nashua New Hampshire on April 16 Herbert Russell Shear aged 23 years and one month. In this city on April 19 William A Johnson aged 78 died at 1614 School street. Funeral services will be held at residence 161 School Street on Wednesday forenoon at 10 oclock. Friends invited.
