Boston April 21 The Democratic state convention opens at Music Hall with John W. Corcoran as state committee chairman calling the meeting to order. Thomas J. Gargan of Boston named resolutions chairman and John R. Thayer of Worcester introduced as permanent chairman delivering a lengthy speech.
Governor Morrill received a request to deploy state troops to St John in Stafford county to quell a riot between circus followers and townspeople. The mob, enraged by stolen money, led to five men being badly wounded and the sheriff telegraphing for militia to restore order.
A skiff carrying nine men overturned while leaving Lock 9 near Charleston West Virginia on April 21. Three men drowned while the other six swam to shore.
Judge Lawton presided at the probate session in Lowell presenting wills for Betsy Ashworth Arthur Bonney Ellen Crowley Nathan S Greenleaf and others. Vienna April 21 Baron Hirsch died this morning of heart disease on his Kolona estate. The prominent figure, known for his philanthropy and business leadership, passed peacefully as reports confirm. His death leaves a vacancy in local charitable boards and business circles.
Paris reports the death of Leon Say an eminent political economist who passed away at 2.30 this morning. The obituary notes his prominence in economic and political circles and his contributions to public thought.
Baltimore April 20 The district attorney announced plans to enter a pressed case against Frank and Mattie V Angelier a man and wife charged with first degree murder in the shooting of Charles Parker last winter Mrs Angelier says the shooting was in defense of her honor The trial previously ended with a hung jury eleven to one for acquittal
In the April 21 police court session James H Pearson paid a $10 fine for noise and drunkenness. Joseph Gratton received four months in the workhouse for a similar offense, and John M Andrews five months as a repeat offender. Michael and Julia Barry were continued for maintaining a liquor nuisance until April 28. William Gendreau arranged support for his wife Mary and left with her. James Hounsell paid $2 for riding a bicycle on the boulevard sidewalk yesterday.
New London April 20 James Davidson veteran shipbuilder died at his home this morning aged 72 after a three day illness with pneumonia. Capt Davidson was well known along the Atlantic seaboard for building many schooners and other coasting vessels.
Chicago April 20 The Democratic State Central Committee of Illinois decided to hold the state convention at Peoria on Tuesday June 23. The move sets the date and venue for the party gathering.
The four year old Lincoln Whitman, son of Mr and Mrs I Watts Whitman, was killed by a Lowell and Suburban car on High Street near Pond Street as he rode his velocipede to school. The incident left his parents and car crew shocked. Lincoln had sung in church concerts and his mother had served in the High Street church quartet. The boy died from a skull fracture. His father is recovering from injuries at St John’s Hospital. The car’s crew were prostrated, and the fender was down according to witnesses. The accident prompted remarks on slow transit near school intervals. The meeting of the Sons of the American Revolution included a banquet at the Hotel Vendome. Charles BE Adams was elected a manager and delegate to the Richmond convention.
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows anniversary will be observed by Lowell Chelmsford and Billerica lodges with exercises at Odd Fellows hal Middlesex street next Sunday at 2 30. Rev Robert Court presides with Lowell clergy officiating Inauguration of service includes invocation scripture reading prayer and remarks by multiple clergy followed by principal address and music by local lodge groups and church choirs.
The Massachusetts State Society held its annual meeting yesterday on Patriots Day at Old South Church in Boston. Lowell was represented by Burton H. and other members attending the event.

Yesterday morning Co C men shot for qualifications with Sergt Peters scoring 41 and Private Hahn 387 qualifying for first class and sharpshooter. In the afternoon others qualified including Sergt Wenden as sharpshooter 22 Corp Berry first class 21 Corp Tuttle first class 21 Private Kittredge third class 17 Private Clogston second class 18 Private Willoughby third class 16 Private Ashworth first class 21 and Sergt B W Plaisted of Co D Second Corps Cadets qualifying for second class with scores of 20 and 19.
