A new firm named Leighton Brothers, Amos and Frank Leighton, takes possession of the French & Puffer store, which began in 1866. The stock changes hands after auction and the brothers plan to run a high standard, serving wholesale and retail needs with strong community support.
The trial run of the battleship Massachusetts is scheduled for Monday the 20th along the Massachusetts coast. Viewers can watch from Rockport as the ship passes within a mile and a half of shore near Turk's Head Inn and northern observers may see it from Eastern Point light. Trains run from Union Station at 6.10, 8.20, 10.45 a.m. and 12.50 p.m. with return departures from Rockport at 1.15, 3.18, 5.00 and 6.20 p.m.
The Lowell and Suburban street railway company fired four workers for smoking on the Lakeview avenue route, despite prior warnings. The men allege they were not warned and call the discharge unfair, while foreman Michael O'Donnell says the rule was violated and acted accordingly.
Fred Milnes, proprietor of a corner gro cer y store at Kinsman and Pine Hill streets, has left town without informing friends. He was last seen at 6 30 last Saturday. When his shop failed to open, creditors entered to manage affairs and recover partial claims, then took possession of what's left. Supt Oliver is repainting seats on the North Common.
A grand memorial service at Mechanics Hall honors late Governor Greenhalge with 1500 invited guests, Gov. Wolcott and many state leaders present. The 4000 in attendance heard Rev. Hale offer prayer, Brahms Requiem performed, and Henry Cabot Lodge deliver the eulogy as the ceremony closed with America and a benediction.
The Lawrence cloth department releases 300 operatives as spinning rooms finish their work. Overseers seek new jobs. E. B. Stafford will lead the Appleton mill white work on Tuesday. Weave rooms and later cloth rooms are expected to close by May 15 and July 1 respectively, curtailing Little Canada building activity and prompting moves to Lawrence, Fall River, and Nashua.
April 18 prisoners faced heat in the dock. Three drunkenness cases involved John A. Copeland, William A. Kelly, and Arthur Wood, each pleading guilty and held on $200 to Wednesday to check for a keg theft. John Cox fined for an unlicensed dog. Cebille Morin remanded to grand jury on breaking and entering with $300 surety. John Parker jailed six months for hammer theft, his third such sentence.
Counsel W L Putnam filed a bill of information for the attorney general in the supreme court asking for an injunction against Warren Sherburne to stop remodeling the old city hall in Lowell. The suit alleges walls and bay windows extend four feet and over the public street on the triangular lot bounded by Shattuck Merrimack streets. The Lowell Institution for Savings is the informant. An order of notice returnable Tuesday next was issued.
A shaft of lightning hit the house of Andrew Oleson in Wallace Michigan causing two deaths and two fatally injured. Two children aged 6 and 8 died, and Mrs. Oleson and another child were fatally or seriously hurt along with visiting Mrs. Anderson.
An early morning coal oil explosion at Emil Schafer’s saloon on North Baymiller Street in Cincinnati caused a fire and injuries. Two women and two children were severely burned and taken to a hospital for treatment. Several residents in the upper tenement escaped narrowly.
An organized band of smugglers on the Colville reservation crosses Chinamen into the United States. Government officials struggle to stop the traffic and threaten death to anyone involved.
Mr. I Watts Whitman of 65 Fort Hill Avenue, an employee at the J. C. Ayer laboratory, fell through a floor opening at 815 this morning. He was taken by ambulance to St Johns hospital. no bones were broken but he was severely shaken.
No issue on Monday as Patriots' Day falls on Sunday and is observed on Monday. The Courier will not publish Monday afternoon. Morning Citizen will appear Monday and Tuesday as usual with Lowell observances general.
The Merrimack river remains high with levels up 3 inches from yesterday. At 8 AM the crest was 4 feet 11 inches above the dam, an inch more than yesterday, though mills expect no trouble.
Mrs Lottie Sibley organized a Thursday night gathering for the Sunday school class of young women at Mrs John Thorne's home 66 Howard Street. Performances included vocal duets by Lizzie Harris and John Thorne, piano by Mildred Dennison, singing by Nettie Studley readings by Gertrude Harris Florence Lenox and Lottie Pratt and Eva Pratt in duets and cornet and piano by Lottie Pratt. Refreshments followed and the group sang a parting hymn.

The Sawyer Carriage Co recently shipped a wagon to Brockton for the city fire department chief. The design followed plans used by Chief Hosmer and drew praise from a evaluating committee that compared several manufacturers in New England.
A Canadian rail yard worker, 21, Joseph McGowan of 49 Bartlett street, died after a crowbar lever struck him under the ear while shifting rails from freight cars near Congress street. He died en route to St Johns hospital. His body was taken to J W Brooks undertaking rooms. McGowan had only worked in the city four weeks. his parents live in Birchton, Quebec.
Auctioneer Conant set the pace as about 100 people gathered for the sale of broken down city horses. Nine horses and three wagons sold at good prices, with draughts bringing up to 77 dollars and an average sale price near 45 dollars, highlighting the benefits of publicity.
Island of Jamaica grows as a favored winter retreat for Lowell people fueled by extensive advertising in Citizen and Courier. Since 1894 Sakaellite sailed from Lowell, with count increasing to about twenty this year including travelers from Lawrence and North Andover. Boston Fruit Company plans two faster steamers built in England, each for 40 passengers, cutting Boston service transit time from five and a half to six days to about four and a half days.
The Streets Committee after hearings accepted Foster street from Princeton to Westford for land at 20 cents per square foot and granted 600 to Mr White for house relocation. It approved Swift street and Chase street sidewalks, the High School sidewalk, and Wilder street sidewalk. Flagstones to be installed on crosswalks from Concord to High streets and at Little Canada crossings. Mt Vernon street to be paved from Broadway to Rock street. A county hearing date on widening Chelmsford street was to be set by Engineer Bowers.
Rev. Frank A. Warfield D D fills Kirk Street and First Congregational churches on Sabbaths and preaches tomorrow at the latter church as he moves to a leading Omaha pastorate. W A Bartlett to preach at Kirk Street. Rev Thomas Van Ness of Boston to speak at the Unitarian church.
Monday April 20 briefing notes show Executive Council meets at 3 p m and club business at 3 30 with a 4 pm lecture by Prof John C Van Dyke of Rutgers College on Portrait Painting illustrated by stereopticon. Mr E F Fenollosa of Boston, who was to lecture April 20, sailed for Europe April 8. The Lecture Committee calls this a fortunate securing of Van Dyke to fill the vacancy.

Putnam and Son and Hapgood Wrisslet are ill at home on Lawrence street. John H. Kimball visits R. H. Ewart in New York. J. T. W. Mountford visits his sister in Stoddard New Hampshire. Clinton R. Carpenter plans a brief visit to his former home in St. Johnsbury Vermont. Mrs. S. J. Russell, mother of Mrs. R. M. Boutwell, dies in Louisville Kentucky last Thursday. Michael Collins of Collins mills travels to Bermuda for health. Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Candee return from wintering in New Whatcom Washington to Tewksbury. The lieutenant governor signs a resolution awarding Mrs. Greenhalge the late governor salary for the year. Gen. Ames will not address Memorial hall next Tuesday. a new date will be set. In New York: Hoffman Co M Windsor, Mrs. Kitson and Miss Kitson among others. Rev. Harvey B. Greene reports Flora specimens from Syria and plans to return via London in May. Mrs. Alice F. Spaulding’s talks on trees and shrubs begin April 29–30 with address 1016 Middlesex street. A letter from James Bayles notes improvement in Geer’s condition. Geer to return to Lowell on the 23rd. Frederick S. Geer, long with J. and J. M. Pearson, inherits fortune and retires at nearly eighty, wishing long happiness.
Saran Chanley aged 68 died suddenly of heart failure at 120 Forest Street yesterday afternoon. The body was taken to 63 Princeton Street, the deceased’s home. Zilpha M. Bisbee died this morning at her son’s home 45 Worthen Street aged 81, widow of Ira Bisbee who died in 1863. William H. Gould of Charlestown died April 18 at his granddaughter’s residence, Mrs. Alfred L. Smith, aged 82.
The funeral services were held at the home of her niece Mrs. J A Evans on Thirteenth street yesterday. Rev R A Greene conducted the services with Mr Joseph W Leach singing. J B Currier oversaw arrangements. Burial will take place in New London New Hampshire.
