In San Francisco on April 22 the church conference voted 43 to 32 to suspend Dr Brown on charges of untruthfulness. After the vote Dr Brown denounced Dr McLean in strong terms and even threatened to assault him.
Joplin Mississippi the Cherokee Lanyon company a major smelter will suspend operations cutting 12 to 15 furnaces due to low metal trade mood and weak demand for smelter output dated April 22.
Denver reports Judge Johnson appoints Madame M. A. Warren as a district court juror, marking the first woman to serve in that capacity in Colorado.
Recent deaths note Artemus W. Stearns of Lawrence died suddenly at his Fairmount summer residence from heart disease. Robert L. Day, Boston banker and philanthropist, died at his Newton Place home aged 76, after a career from clerk to founder of R L Day & Co., with long Boston residence and charitable ties to Congregational institutions.
Four Greeks James Orfans Peter Chives Nicholas Orfans and James Orgoras faced the court for obstructing the street on the canal bridge. Judge Hadley fined each 20 cents after noting mild circumstances and urged police to request move on before action. Five drunks released. William A. Kelley jailed two months for larceny with extra month for drunkenness. John F. Copeland fined $10. Arthur Ford and Daniel Sullivan fined $3 each.
The city government will hold a memorial service for Greenhalge at Huntington hall Sunday at 3 PM. Mayor Courtney will preside. Hon. Geo. F. Lawton will be eulogized. Music by the High Street church quartette and the Lowell Orchestral society is invited. Alderman Tryder and President Webster head the arrangements. details remain to be perfected.
Veritas lodge, first organized in 1844 and charter surrendered in 1859, was reinstituted in August 1871 with officers led by N G Joseph Field and C G Elias H. Colburn. Present officers include Noble Grand Edward W. Chadbourne and Secretary A Hyde Schoolcraft. Only two former officers remain as members, P Hirshfield and EH Sanborn. The lodge reports good work and solid finances with 310 members.
A vestry sociable at the First Presbyterian church drew a large crowd last night with an entertainment preceding a supper. Performers included Miss Dobson, Alice Hunt, Mr. McLaren, Alexander Mack, duets by Thompson, May McKeen, Jennie Crowdis, recitations by Walter Tucker and Walter Leith, piano solos by Gertrude Wilcox and Mrs. Hunt under Y. P. S. C. EB auspices.
Mayor Courtney states he will sign the resolution for the Fourth of July appropriation. The aldermen’s committee to consider the matter will be announced at the next board meeting. Street talk questions the wisdom of spending so much on the celebration given city finances.
A pleasant evening promised at Grace Universalist church coffee party this evening with supper from 6 to 7 30. Emma Prichard Hadley of Boston will read assisted by Mr Edward Everett Adams soloist and others admission including supper 15 cents
In this city Julie Cartier wife of Napoleon Cartier died at Lowell General Hospital on April 20 aged 30 years eight months. Lilla Cunningham daughter of John and Jane Cunningham died at 746 Central Street on April 21 aged 16 years. Lydia B Smith of Chelmsford died April 22 aged 8 years six months.
The Middlesex Bar association held a memorial meeting in Lowell to honor Governor Frederic T. Greenhalge and Hon. Arthur P. Bonney. Judge Holmes presided as chairs and speakers recounted Bonney’s career, Greenhalge’s legal prowess, and their service to the bar and public life. The new city directory reports 28,042 total names, up 1,656 from last year. Editors removed 7,771 names and added 9,427 replacements in a substantial revision effort.
Francis Jewett formerly of Lowell and Erie Telegraph and Telephone director died suddenly at his home on Middlesex Street at 8 45 this morning after rising from breakfast. He was active in business and politics, served as mayor and state senator, and held multiple bank and company positions. He was born in Nelson New Hampshire in 1820 and married Selina Dodge. they had two sons Abner A. and Frank B. Jewett. The town flag at City Hall flew at half mast in his memory.
Funeral services were held at the Morris home on Lakeview Avenue for Mary J. and Lucy H. Morris who died in the drowning incident, with Rev. George S. Sinclair presiding and interment in Edson Cemetery. Separately, Mrs. Wealthy Porter Perkins’ funeral occurred at her son Henry Perkins’s Otis Street home with Rev. Huntington officiating, bearing by Perkins grandsons, and burial in Lowell Cemetery. The body of William H. Gould was sent to Melrose for interment in Wyoming Cemetery. Mrs. Zilpha M. Bisbee’s funeral took place at 45 Worthen Street with Rev. George F. (text ends).
Kenngett officiated and the interment was in Edson cemetery. The funeral of the little Whitman boy, who was killed by an electric car Tuesday, will be held tomorrow morning from the house on Fort Hill avenue. Rev. H. W. O. Millington will conduct the service, which will be private. Interment will be at Ipswich, Mass.
James Cummings, longtime city resident, died yesterday at his Jefferson street home at age 58. Lydia B. Smith, widow of Jesse Smith and former Chelmsford resident, died this morning at her Acton street home at 68 years 6 months. Cause of death was heart failure following a grip attack. Funeral for Mrs Smith will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at her home.
St Pauls Sunday school has elected officers with George S Fenderson as Superintendent and Miss Lillian Churchill as treasurer. Assistants include William H Lincoln Georgianna Vinton and John Popplewell. Poor committee chaired by Mrs Richards and notable resignations not accepted.
Mrs P J Nolan and daughter plan to sail for Europe this week. Mrs A H Schoolcraft visits her sister in Franklin New Hampshire for a few days. Mr and Mrs Julius C Johnson return from a southern trip. I Watts Whitman injured at J C Ayer lab reports improvement. Cape E W Thompson returns from Jamaica aboard the Boston Fruit line steamer Brook. Miss Josie G Sheehan enjoys a pleasant Boston wheel trip on Patriot’s Day. Rev Dr Smith Baker named director of the Congregational Sunday School and Publishing Society for three years. Mrs H H Stickney hosts a small dinner for Mrs Frank Farnum and her daughter Mrs McAlister of Dixfield Maine.
