April 16 Sandwich battles a spreading forest fire encircling Forestdale and threatening East Sandwich. Fire Warden Percival helps save a Boston alums summer home as crews rush to aid rapidly advancing flames. By 2.30 p.m. Dr Wesselhofft’s Sandwich summer residence burned. Dr James Lovell’s home caught fire but was put out.
Trustees under the Nichols will sell by public auction at 5 o'clock tomorrow after noon, rain or shine, the block of tenements and store numbered 395 Central street and 1 2 3 and 4 Bay State avenue in Middlesex county. The estate fronts Central street and Bay State avenue, contains 3118 square feet, adjacent to Charles street, near A W Dows block, with strong income potential. Conant & Co. in charge, trustees Charles M Williams and George W Poore.
Fire swept a four tenement block at Second and L streets Turners Falls injuring a girl who will recover. A crippled boy escaped by tying a rope from his third floor room. Five children aged 4 to 12 perished as flames spread rapidly and trapped occupants. Property loss is about $2000.
William Dunlap valet and William Turner footman were captured in London with $45,000 in jewels. Telegraphs to New York link them to the Burden family jewel robbery, noting both men previously served in the city.
Pittsburg on April 17 reports that tin plate manufacturers failed to form a definite nod at their meeting but created an organization to regulate the New York price of I. C. common by the foreign market. The current price is $3.30. Nearly every tin plate manufacturer in the country is represented, with two exceptions.
West Superior Mich April 17 The largest strike at Lake Superior head will start if the request is denied. Coal heavers seek 50 cents instead of 40 cents and all city trades and labor unions pledge support for the movement.
In Kansas City a steel saw eight inches long and an inch wide was found in the cell of William Taylor the Meeks family murderer, moved from Carrollton to prevent lynching. He is denied all intercourse with outside friends.
A converter at the Peoria Sugar refinery exploded at 2.15 this morning, filling the room with steam. About 100 workers were present. at least three men died and several others were badly injured.
Springfield Illinois April 17 There is a well organized movement by the A P A to defeat candidates pledged for McKinley on April 29.
London reports General Booth cabled New York to collect all charges brought against him by Zallington Booth. The dispatch confirms pursuit of formal claims and potential legal action as tensions rise in the case.
The Straits of Mackinaw are now open and navigation has begun as of April 17, with Mackinaw announcing the channel is clear for vessels. Authorities expect normal traffic to resume as ice melts and weather allows.
The Rocky Mountain News reports that Colorado delegates to the national Democratic convention will leave the hall and the party unless the platform calls for free coinage and the candidate aligns with that platform.
Newmarket New Hampshire April 16 A fire started by careless pasture burning burned two hundred acres of valuable timber land this afternoon and remains burning tonight. Firefighters work to stop it from reaching a large lumber yard. Damage runs to several thousand dollars.
Gloucester April 16 City Marshal Parsons issues notice urging parents to send boys to bed earlier. He warns that boys charged with misdemeanors will be brought before the court rather than receiving a reprimand. Boys have caused considerable trouble of late.
Dr J Mount Bleyer described a photo-fluoroscope at the Medico-Legal Society meeting in New York, claiming months of work produced a device that lets surgeons see first and photograph what is seen. The apparatus combines a ground glass image receiver, a sensitive plate, Crookes tube, and a head-worn lens system for rapid position adjustments and real time viewing.
An American traveler reports in Cuba's Pinar del Rio province that 32 plantations in Bahia Honda Cabanas and Guanajay have mostly burned. Of 82 estates three weeks earlier, 25 were fully destroyed including sugar mills houses and buildings while canes were chewed to feed troops.

Constantinople reports Mahmoud Pasha a Mussulman appointed governor of Zeitoun in defiance of the Zeitoun agreement requiring a Christian governor. Valis of Bitlis and Kharpoot press for relief for Armenians from the government storehouse, contrary to promises by the porte to Sir Philip Currie that outside relief work would proceed unimpeded.
Capt. Paterson of the Alkali reports the Lakme, Captain Anderson, bound for Cook inlet with 200 miners and freight, is adrift 30 miles west of Sitka after a broken shaft. News allegedly carried by carrier pigeon aboard the steamer.
In Lowell last night the Democratic primaries showcased a rift with resolutions condemning state machine methods, except Ward Five. Ward Seven pushed against the state central committee, signaling a tense race for delegates to Chicago and Boston.

A Woburn resident named B. Creen fell from a 20 foot high staging on Western avenue while working on a building. One ankle was badly broken and the ambulance transported him to St. John's hospital.

In New York Imperial and Broadway Central names appear with spouses. Elizabeth W. Frost recovers from a broken leg but remains bedridden. Mrs. J. C. Tuff leaves Cripple Creek for Denver due to climate after a Texas winter travels.
The funeral for Jonannah Johnson was held this morning at 9 o clock from her Adams street home. Rev Fr Johnson of Boston officiated at the grave side service in Catholic cemetery. Undertaker O Donnell oversaw the interment.
William Coughton born in Lowel in 1820 died recently in Indianapolis. He traveled west in 1856 and became a prominent manufacturer of woolen goods.
