In Boston a weather note says fair and warmer with west winds for Massachusetts. The piece also compares Mr. Bryan to Thomas Jefferson in a dinner setting, and jokes about Croker of New York planning another trip to Europe amid talk of a hasty departure.
A London fire at Hyde Park court Albert Gate threatened a major tragedy as flames raced through an 11 story residence overlook Rotten Row. Fire brigade weaknesses slowed response but all occupants survived after servants leaped to the ninth story veranda.
Two hundred or more weavers at the Middlesex Woolen mills walked out this morning seeking a 20 percent wage increase on specific fabrics. The plant employs 600 to 700 workers, and management fears a shutdown if demands ripple through other departments. Agent Saunders, ignorant of the dispute, indicated no immediate concession and anticipated possibly closing the mill rather than grant a department wide raise. The strike arose amid general wage gains elsewhere, but no committee was formed to negotiate with the agent.
Rioting soldiers at the Presidio gates last night wrecked and burned a saloon. About 100 soldiers from the 18th 21st and 23d regulars plus privates awaiting discharge were arrested with Fourth cavalry troops. The disturbance followed the bartender ejecting a soldier on Saturday.
Former boxing champion John L Sullivan evaded arrest in Astoria Oregon by hiding on a special train after leaving a boxing show He dressed as an engine driver and stood at the throttle while officers searched the train following a charge of violating the law by staging the Sunday bout.
Judge Hadley presided over a Lawrence police court session focusing on drunkenness. Twenty nine offenders faced fines or jail terms. several received probation, state farm, or workhouse sentences. Notable cases include Robert Blakely guilty of drunkenness, James Lynch fined ten dollars, and Mary Calnan returned to jail for six months.
The city board of health will accept few bids for the ash and garbage contract with only two bidders inquiry from a Toledo firm and Thomas Fay of the city. Mayor Crowley orders flags at half mast for Hon. Wm. F. Courtney and calls a council meeting for tomorrow night. Sewer hearings set for April 26, but plan to finish unfinished sewers first may delay new work this year as funds suffice only to complete last year’s projects.

Former three term mayor William F. Courtney died at St. John’s hospital at 8:10 this morning after a long Bright’s disease struggle. Born December 10, 1855 in Belvidere and raised in Lowell, he built a notable legal career and served as city solicitor. His record included impartial rulings on street department staffing and advocacy for labor. Survivors include his wife Mrs. Courtney and relatives. his death ends a prominent Middlesex legal and political chapter.
Lorenzo J. Jewett known as Lennie and member of the Bachelor and Home clubs died after a long illness of consumption. His mother died Friday night and his double funeral, with his father and two sisters, will be held tomorrow at 2 and 2:30 PM from Paige Street Free Baptist Church, with delegations from the Bachelor and Home clubs attending.
William Henry Twombly a veteran Boston area printer and Reading Chronicle contributor died at his Reading home after four years with neuralgia of the heart. He leaves two sons William E. Twombly J. Frank Twombly and daughter Grace Dane. Born February 28 1822 in Dover New Hampshire his long career included printing work in New York and Boston before settling near Boston with family connections in Reading.
