The Grand Lodge of Massachusetts elected officers including Hector Turnbull of Lowell as grand councillor and Mr. Kimball as grand marshal. The Scandinavian lodges were granted a separate grand lodge, and $100 was awarded to the order’s organ and G C T Wiley. Next session to be held in Worcester. Turnbull has long held lodge roles and was the first Lowell grand lodge officer.
Money deposited in the savings department of Traders National Bank at 30 Middlesex Street and 11 Post Office Avenue on or before Saturday May 2 at 9 p m will draw interest at four percent per annum from May first. Associated Press reports a rock fell on a tent at the Florence and Cripple Creek railroad grade near McCort, striking the night crew as blasting began. One man died and two were fatally injured. several others worsened by severe injuries.
In Muskegon on April 10 a desperate man fired five shots at William B. O. Sands of Sands & Maxwell. Three bullets struck Sands who was badly wounded but not in danger. The assailant fled the scene.
Five men including a masked intruder robbed the residence of Dr. Cooper of Galvin Indiana in Paris last night, making off with five thousand dollars. Local authorities are investigating the burglary.
Bishop Ryan died at 6 18 this morning in Buffalo New York on April 10.
Springfield April 9 centennial of the New England conference observed at Wesleyan academy and Memorial church Wilbraham with a memorial service led by Bishop Foss. Addresses by Rev Dr W F Warren and others traced the conference’s impact on education and reform. Tomorrow delegates to the general conference will be elected amid some opposition to Presiding Elder Mansfield.
Cambridge April 9 The Harvard rule for the Doctor of Philosophy degree now requires one year of resident study instead of two. The change maintains high standards and total duration of study, typically three years of advance work, while allowing inter university migration with a year at Cambridge.
Company D of the Second Corps of Cadets was found in excellent condition during last night's annual inspection at the armory. Col A Johnson of Salem led the examination with Major W F Peck and Adjt Andrew Fitts in attendance. Capt George D Kimball and Lieut George E Worthen commanded the company as spectators viewed the drills from the gallery.
April 10 reports sentences for several defendants. John Ryan and Ira W. Newton received four and six months respectively in the work house. John Butler was fined three dollars for drunkenness. Connors, a barber ca. 24, faced a felonious assault charge on Phoebe Dodge with bonds set at 1200, still unsecured. Celina Sansouci was found guilty of illegal liquor sales and fined fifty dollars. Six other cases were filed, including larceny by James Brady and John H. Wayne.
Four matrimonial cases opened in Superior court with decrees nisi granted for Burns and Gilson and Bennett. Oldroyd relived, Horne vs Nevers proceeds on breach of contract claim over coal price. Quinn vs Brown Bros. awarded $100 for injuries. Cover vs Mott plaintiff awarded $47.
Superintendent Davis will attend the National Chiefs of Police meeting in Atlanta starting May 12. Liquor licenses must be obtained and paid by April 30 before 3 PM or be void. Mounted patrols will shift to boat walking in the morning and horses in the afternoon. The police stable is complete and among the best in New England. Dress coats to be worn in May. John E. Maguire’s night lunch wagon license at Gorham and Appleton was revoked. Awnings must be nine feet from the sidewalk for stationary and seven feet for movable. enforcement will be strict with inspections and prosecutions for noncompliance.
A grass fire burned in a lot owned by Alphonse Bibeault on South Wilder street triggering box 81 at 1 30 today. The blaze caused damage to a barn storing lumber and adhered limited property loss.
William M. Wood of Andover and H Kirk White of Lowell were named delegates to the Republican convention in St Louis with two alternates chosen. The Jackson hall meeting opened at 11 and concluded with White as delegate and Miller as alternate after a formal balloting process amid party maneuvering and cheers for Reed of Maine.
The Belvidere Outing club held its annual leap year party at Wells hall with 100 couples attending. A new dance called New York nine pin featured about 50 couples, while guests were greeted in a checking room. Decorations used palms and greenery and the organizers included Marguerite Smith Marietta King and Sen n ie Dunham on the arrangements with Mrs John B Swift Mrs Dr Walker and Mrs Eugene P McOsker as matrons.
H. W. Church of Concord sues William White Machine Co of Nashua for infringing Church Kitson Machine Co Lowell patent rights. Col. S. E. Jewett of Laconia leads legal team with counsel for Church and Kitson. A. W. Crosby of Boston serves as patent attorney.
Chairman 8 C Smiley led a Memorial Day committee meeting in Post 185 hall. They voted to ask the relief corps linked to Post 42 to decorate the monument and let decorations stay Sunday. The mayor, Aldermen leaders, and parade board chair will ride in the parade with D H Varnum appointing W W Tuttle as chief of staff. Invitations extend to military companies ambulance corps Dahlgren associates and the high school regiment.
Grand Regent David led Highland council and Royal Arcanum last night. Five applications were received as the initiation ceremony took place. Albert W. David Grand Regent and Clark of Andover Grand Vice Regent, plus Grand Orator Walsh, delivered speeches. Solos by Daly and Foster preceded a banquet with refreshments.
