Washington reports a Florida conference involving Quay and Platt as McKinley negotiates patronage terms. Robinson, a Quay ally and Pennsylvanian congressman, hints that Quay may yield to the McKinley faction. If both leaders accept terms, McKinley’s nomination seems assured.
Money deposited in the savings department of the Traders National Bank at 30 Middlesex Street and 11 Post Office Avenue on or before Saturday May 2 at 9 p m will draw interest at four percent per annum from May 1. Interest may be withdrawn or added to the principal on the first days of July and January. Bank hours are 8 a m to 4 p m and Saturdays 9 a m to 1 p m and 7 to 9 p m. William F Hills cashier.
Early today in Salem at 122 Boston street a double tragedy occurred as Miss Josephine Manning aged 28 lay dead with two bullet wounds in her head, and James Flynn aged 35 died by a bullet near a revolver. Lodgers recall a pistol report around 4 am and a fire from the mattress. Flynn had recently courted Miss Manning, and jealousy is blamed though others doubt that motive. Manning came from a respected family and Flynn from business circles with three children.
U S marshals guard a hidden island cavern in the St Joseph river of Elkhart county. Two Utes reported a door to a subterranean room containing counterfeit tools, 4000 fake coins, and gold and silver coins. A pocket book bearing William Crumpacker’s name, a Bristol resident killed in a year old mystery, was found with papers from a prior post office robbery. Treasury agents have sought the source of the flood of counterfeit money for eighteen months.
Evansville Indiana reports a night of mystery as Constable Thomas Hitch is found dead with a bullet in his brain and Ella Stamps is unconscious from a gunshot to the head. The motive remains unknown and no arrest has been made regarding Mrs Ella Stamps or her husband, who faced a divorce trial set for April 9.
Representative Van Voorhis reports a Banking and Currency committee bill to authorize national banks with capital of at least 20000 in towns of 4000 inhabitants, lowering the existing requirement from 50000. The measure, presented in Washington on April 9, aims to ease bank formation in smaller communities.
Five men robbed Pendine Mercantile in Ringo Indian Territory taking a large haul. Two were captured quickly. three deputies encountered the gang near Bartlesville. Jim Rook was fatally shot. Rook is 18. The others were seized on Coon Creek and taken to Fort Smith for trial. Springfield reports the New England conference of the Methodist Episcopal church opened with a communion service in Asbury Park.
Providence April 8 The Narragansett tribe filed a 4 million dollar land claim with the Legislature and will receive a hearing on Tuesday The claim covers land owned by the Indians since early colonial times.
Dr J P Dunn secretary of the national advisory board of the American Protective Association debunks a Western sourced story about an alleged snub to McKinley by the board. He says no letters were sent to Hanna Allison Reed Morton or other managers and no action to oppose McKinley was taken. He notes Hanna did not receive a first letter, and his supposed reply is fiction.
At the Knights of Honor grand lodge session in Boston on April 8, Edward H. Cooke of Lowell was named to the committee on the good of the order. Lodges owing per capita taxes faced denial of representation until fines were settled. A two-thirds vote adopted a motion to amend the constitution regarding cost of subordinate lodge supplies and sent it to the laws committee.
St. Louis, April 8. In the court of criminal correction James J. Corbett and sparring partner Mike Conley were arraigned today for giving a spar ring exhibition contrary to city ordinance. Both pleaded not guilty and Judge Murphy ordered a jury trial.
In Athens on April 8 amid a heavy storm no American cyclists competed while the race proceeded. All riders abandoned the contest except the French entrant Flaming who pressed through the elements and finished alone.
A cablegram from an American Wheelman representative in Athens reports two American riders were denied entry to the 100 kilometer race today. Their amateur status was being questioned, preventing their participation.
Paris April 8 Soir reports a duel between Due Patrice de MacMahon and Comte Guy de Rochefouccould. Neither duelist was seriously hurt and the reason for the encounter is unknown.
Middletown Ct April 8 The grand jury reported a bill against Edward Rogers for the murder of Timothy L Parmanlee of Cobalt The case will be continued until the September term.

John O'Hare of Hose 11 fell from a wagon responding to a box alarm on Andrews street near the U S Cartridge works. His skull fractured when the wagon hit a road irregularity. taken to St Johns hospital he died at 1 45 PM. He was 36, unmarried, with deep firehouse ties and a U S Bunting employer.
Springfield April 8 the Second District Massachusetts convention opened with 132 delegates. Eli sha Morgan and Dr. W M Wright were chosen as delegates, with T H Goodspeed and Senator Irwin as alternates. Delegates are for Reed with McKinley as second choice. Gillett urged to seek re election.
New York April 8 Justice Beekman denied the writ of habeas corpus sought by Benjamin Bassett a bartender. He was arrested by Magistrate Crane for alleged violation of the Raines law in giving free lunches with drinks.
In Superior Court the Central Savings Bank sought eight thousand dollars from the Middlesex MechanicsAssociation notes and an appeal to the Supreme Court looms. Treasurers authority to sign a six thousand five hundred dollar note is questioned amid board disagreements. Delia Hussey sues Constable Gately for loaned money. police court judge affirmed. Uncontested divorces: Sabina Brewster deserts John B. Brewster. Otis Atherton granted decree nisi. Agnes Kitchener granted decree from Alfred Kitchener. Jury waived, cases proceed. Cover v Mott over inferior hay. Powell v Wells horse-swapping dispute heard with mixed opinions.

Frank J Simonds elected president James F Hearn secretary. A meeting is planned next Monday to finalize the organization and set a schedule.
The Overseers of the Poor dined in Worcester and conducted the annual inspection of the lunatic asylum. 29 Lowell patients are inmates, with only two pronounced well enough to return to Lowell. Last year 17 were discharged. Some overseers then visited Boston.

A two act society drama titled An Engaging Position by Lewis E. MacBrayne debuted at A C Russell’s Wilder street residence in Thesday evening to cheering patrons of the Ayer Home. A second performance is planned for April 21 at the Home with actors including Gardner W Pearson Walter Coburn Sarah E Calef Ethel Emerson and E Florence Chase.
April 9 Police court convened briefly. W. H. Gerow, released yesterday, held for drunkenness and continued to April 10. J. F. Groom and Michael Trainor, both drunk, released. Anthony Mead, a troublesome boy near the Opera house, placed on probation.
The Lowell clearing house held its annual meeting at the Appleton bank and elected officers including President George W. Knowlton Vice-President Frederick Blanchard Secretary Fred H. Ela and Manager John F. Sawyer. The new clearing house for the year will be at the First National bank with bank hours set 9 to 3 daily except Saturdays and 9 to 12 on Saturdays. A voter copy was sent to each bank for board voting.
A very enjoyable evening was presented by the People's Club men’s branch directed by Miss Kittie A Walsh. The program featured a piano duet by Misses Mary Thomas and Kittie Walsh, readings by Joseph Mellen, songs by Miss Frances Tighe and others, a banjo duet by Miss Lottie Walsh and Arthur Baldwin, and a violin solo by Mr John Quinn with accompaniments by Miss Kittie Walsh and Edith Cornock.
A quiet wedding was held at 185 Tremont Street Wednesday evening with Annie J Ullock and Lewis C Clark united in marriage by Rev Geo F Kenngett. The bride and her sister Miss Maggie A Ullock wore white brilliantine trimmed with lace and the groom was supported by Mr Thomas McAfee. They left by the 845 train for Bright Ont where they will reside for a two.
