A Melbourne scene reported in the British and Colonial Printer and Stationer recounts a humorous exchange between a reporter and General Booth. The reporter plans to leave with his copy but is warned by Booth that the Lord is greater than the sub editor, who answers that the sub editor disagrees.
Boston April 10 The lieutenant governor signed a proclamation setting Saturday April 25 as Arbor Day in the Commonwealth. The document urges observance to beautify towns, destroy pests, and plant shrubs and vines, noting the elm canopies and maple splendor of past generations. The proclamation, dated April 11, 1896, is issued in Boston by acting governor Roger Wolcott and William M. Olin.
The real bock beer season invites connoisseurs to enjoy Anheuser-Busch bock brewed in St. Louis. John Lennon & Co. sole agents at 302 310 Market street announce annual supply, available draft or in cases. Early order advised. delivery in cases citywide.
Money deposited in the savings department of Traders National Bank at 30 Middlesex Street and 11 Post Office Avenue on or before Saturday May 2 at 9 o clock p m will draw interest at four per cent per annum from May first. Bridgeport, April 11. Charles Kostratski, a 36 year old Slavonian, shot Mary Bugil a widow with seven children, four bullets hitting her and leaving her in critical condition at the hospital. He had been living with her and sought to elope. after a quarrel he drew a pistol and was arrested.
Helena Mont April 11 another victim added to the Hope mine disaster toll. A rescue party descended the shaft but overpowering gas forced them to retreat. One rescuer died from gas exposure, bringing the total fatalities to eight if seven men remain unaccounted for.
Nashville police report Dr. A. H. Williams of Hendersonville was shot dead just outside his home last night. Ambushers fired from concealment, wounding him eleven times before he died. no suspects or motive are known at this time.
St. Louis reports Robert Ball, suspected in the Sleepy Hill train robbery on April 1, was captured in Litchfield Illinois. He resisted arrest, shots were fired, and Ball sustained an arm wound during the confrontation.
A Havana dispatch confirms Consul General Williams is safe and denies reports of any battle involving Maceo’s troops, with claims of 500 deaths being unfounded. The message arrived in Washington on April 11.
Walter Pike admitted the Broadway theft of 1950 dollars was of his own making. He now says he gave the money to Bella Lyons, with whom he lived, and all but $5 has been recovered.
New York reports Moses Rosenberg a wholesale hosiery dealer for 35 years committed death by self destruction by inhaling illuminating gas. He had suffered for several years and his death is noted as the result of his long illness.
Dublin reports the British ship Carravonshie, en route from San Francisco to Dublin, wrecked this morning off Skibbereen. No casualties reported, authorities assessing salvage and damage.
Boston April 11 The Suffolk county grand jury returned an indictment against Henry Morrison for the murder of his wife Flora H Morrison on Monday March 23.
Springfield April 11. August Seguine was instantly killed this morning by the explosion of a dynamite cartridge he was thawing out while blasting in Acushnet avenue.
Impressive ceremonies marked the funeral of John O'Hare. Firemen formed at Central station at 1.80 pm, marched to 1 Prospect Street, then to St. Peter's church and Catholic cemetery. Bearers from Hose 11 included Joseph Jennings and several colleagues. floral offerings honored the deceased.
An ornate arch with a red star bore Mr O Hares number 274 and the last call 38. A white dove rested on the arch while another looked upward. Shopmates offered a touching tribute as the interment took place in the Catholic cemetery under Undertaker Rogers.
In the police court in the morning about a dozen drinkers testified on liquor intake with several released. Sentences included Kate Martin one monthWorkhouse Maur ice Quinn four months Workhouse Frank Early ten dollar fine and John Ryan four months Workhouse plus Morency fined ten dollars for larceny of tailor’s shears. Samuel Salerbot case continued for milk law violation. Hugh and Mary Gildee prosecuted for illegal liquor at Gorham and Chambers streets. Mrs Gildee found not guilty. Granger tried for illegal liquor keeping at 684 Lakeview avenue. rejected defense claim of deliveries for Turcotte with 15 percent share. Connors felonious assault case continued to April 15. Granger liquor case continued to Monday.
Invitations and tickets for the Greenhalge memorial service in Mechanics Building Boston will be mailed Monday. About 450 under galleries and 700 rear tickets will be available for those with admission passes. Invitations go to civil, military, naval officers, foreign consuls, state commissioners, militia, officials, legislators, State House staff, and 32 city governments. Each senator and representative gets five tickets for constituent distribution. Courtenay Guild chairs the arrangements committee.
Warren Sherburne of Boston, who bought the old city hall property at auction last year, is summoned before the attorney general to show cause why he should add to his property. The Lowell Institution for Savings brings the proceedings, likely tied to building rights. Plans call for a four foot addition on Shattuck street and a ten foot addition to the rear, amid long standing questions of a right of way. Snow removal was requested by the bank during winter. Sherburne maintains the land was bought without restricted encumbrances.
Fred Derosiers, 24, a Lowell Machine Shop worker in the polishing dept, died after a steel plate struck a revolving wheel and his face, then his head, in the third‑shift. He lived on Davidson Street. his father George also works at the shop. He had been employed six years and was married.
In yesterday's afternoon session several divorces were granted. Eliza Farwell obtained a decree from Harry L. Farwell due to intemperate habits. Minnie McGann sought divorce from William H. McGann citing infidelity. Helen St. Pierre was granted a decree against Joseph with custody to her. Margaret Gaffney's divorce from Myles Gaffney cited cruel treatment. Charles W. Carr was freed from his wife Mattie B. Carr amid abandonment claims. Alexander Duby obtained a decree from Irene for adultery and cruelty.
Charles F. Carr uncovered weather records dating to 1876 at the armory. Notable events include a late sleighing start in 1875 76, heavy snow on April 4, 1876, Yellow Tuesday on Sept 6 1881, and dramatic storms in June. The notes record multiple winters with heavy snow and long sleighing periods.
The excerpt notes January 19 period averages around 16 to 19 degrees and 1884 1844. August 1887 set 60 year rainfall records at 12.28 inches, with 1888 rainfall at 59 inches also breaking long terms. Massachusetts averages 46 inches yearly. May 9 10 1889 marked the warmest days yet summer proved unusually cool. The record ends.
Centre high school pupils held their annual town meeting on Friday afternoon. A Miss Moderator was elected for the first time, with Miss Mary Devine receiving all votes. The town clerk was reelected and license was defeated by 30. One young lady volunteered to collect taxes for nothing and was elected. An appropriation for the graduating class of 1896 was approved, praised as essential school work. The meeting was conducted well and adds to the town’s good record.
Mr and Mrs Charles B Owley celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at 75 High Street Charlestown with guests from Boston Somerville Andover Haverhill and the city. An orchestra performed readings were by Miss Carrie Sweetland and a gift of 50 in gold from the Boston Caledonian club. They wed in Andover on April 10 1846.
Mr Andrew J Murry and Miss Katherine Ryan were united in marriage at the Sacred Heart Church at 6 30 PM on Wednesday. Very Rev Fr Gillard, O M I officiated. The bride wore white lansdown and lace with a bouquet of bride roses. Attendant Miss Sadie Ryan wore white cashmere with muslin de soie. Best man was Mr Patrick Murry. A 7 30 reception followed at the bride’s parents home 45 Barrington Street. The couple will reside at 43 Barrington Street after a short wedding tour.
A public meeting of the Mollie Varnum Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is set for April 17 at 3 o’clock in Associate hall. Rev. Berle, chaplain of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery. Mrs. E. S. Masury, vice president general of the National Society. and Hon. C. D. Palmer will speak. Public invitation extended.

General Superintendent Sanborn of the Boston and Maine railroad issues an order excluding coal dumps and ice cars from trains not fully composed of those car types after April 15. The rule follows numerous wrecks from mixing these cars with loaded long cars in trains.
