Boston April 7. Honorables William E Russell and Louis S Dabney for Kidder Peabody and Morgan syndicate met Governor Walcott to urge a special message to the Legislature. The aim is to authorize West End Street Railway or Boston Elevated Railway to use the subway in connection with an elevated line.
Rebels plundered and burned three stores at Sumidero in Pinar del Rio. A cavalry pursuit killed six insurgents. Spanish gunboat Alvarado engaged insurgents near Fort Marabi, driving attackers ashore after a brief exchange. Insurgents also attacked La Salud, where a fort defended against a major assault with heavy losses.
Athletes from the United States lead the events in Athens on April 7 as American runners and jumpers prevail. Thomas Curtis of Boston wins a hurdle heat in 18 seconds, Ellery H. Clark takes the broad jump with 6 meters 34 centimeters, while Robert Garrett of Princeton places second in the same event. Thomas E. Burke of Boston wins the 400 meters heat in 64.15 seconds, with H. B. Jameson of Princeton second. Garrett wins the shot put at 11 meters 22 centimeters. Money deposited in the savings department at Traders National Bank locations on or before Saturday May 2 by 9 o’clock p m will earn four percent annual interest from May 1. The body of University of Wisconsin athlete John Day, who drowned Monday in Lake Mendota, was taken to Janesville for his funeral. A large number of college students attended the service and the crew teammates who survived the incident are recovering. an effort will be made to keep the crew together.

Langdon North Carolina April 8. Frank Saunders, agent of the Great Northern railroad, attempted death by his own hand because of a $6000 shortage in his accounts. He had committed numerous forgeries to cover up his transactions and traces of them.

The trial, ongoing into afternoon, also saw Demers vs McGovern dismissed.
Fire this morning severely damaged the home of J. W. Kinnan at the Fowler's road corner Haven road Pawtucketville. The blaze started behind the stove on the ground floor and ran up the partition to the roof. It spread across most of the roof before stemming as the fire department arrived from box 74 at 11 06 o'clock. Estimated loss about 150 dollars.

Appropriations for sewers, a North Common flag staff, watering streets, Memorial day, and water board member election were approved as were reconsiders of a defeated $19,000 vote. The board adjourned at 11:10.
The annual Easter sale at St John’s Episcopal parish runs this afternoon and evening in Huntington and Jackson halls. A large assortment of items is offered and Jackson hall serves as a supper room with refreshments. An operetta directed by Mr Blunt is in progress and another comedy titled A comedy of errors up to date will be shown tonight. At 9:30 the hall clears for dancing with music by the American orchestra.

At a Tuesday meeting the Y M C A Woman's Auxiliary pledged to raise $1000 within the next two years to aid in constructing a state building in Boston. The decision followed an appeal by State Secretary Armstrong and Mrs. O H Durrell of Cambridge.
