New Mexico Absent Ballot Plan Fails in All 32 Counties
Attorney General Richard Robinson ruled that although the September general election produced a statewide majority, the absentee ballot constitutional amendment did not achieve the required two thirds in every county. He noted long standing Supreme Court precedent that voting changes need a statewide majority and a 2/3 county majority. Secretary Beatrice Roach reported 12 counties lacked a simple majority and Mora County rejected the measure.

Tillman pleads guilty in assault with deadly weapon case
Q C Poncho Tillman, 28, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to commit a felony before Justice of Peace John W Green. He did so after an early morning break in at Gladiola, Texas, and was jailed in lieu of $1000 bond. He waived extradition back to New Mexico following the arrest.

Mrs. Mary Faye Williams of Hobbs dies after church services at the Nazarene Church on September 27 at age 56. Funeral rites led by Rev. Joe Rogers will be held with burial at Memory Gardens after services Wednesday at 2:30. She is survived by her husband P. B. Williams, six sons Bul ler, Jimmy, Lee in Stockton, Wayne, Lazell, and two more, and four daughters including Mrs. Eva Teague and Mrs. Verna Dean Hodges.

Lindley V. Williamson aged 42 died at New Mexico State Hospital in Las Vegas on Sunday September 27, 1953. He was returned to Hobbs for funeral services with burial in White Deer Texas. Wildcats Hold Eagles To Three Touchdowns In Hobbs Battle
A crowd of about 8,500 watched Hobbs Eagles held to three touchdowns by the Wildcats at Eagle Stadium. Levington blocked Hobbs, but Wildcats showed power and kept the Eagles from scoring again, despite multiple threats. Wilder and Brawley scored for Hobbs with Brawley converting, while Sloan added a second Hobbs touchdown after an interception. Wildcats finished with 11 first downs as they prepare to meet Eunice Cardinals next Friday.

Yearwood Hurt Fighting Fire at Amerado Oil Lease
Yearwood sustained burns to his left hand while helping extinguish a fire at Amerado State La-17 well near Lovington. Authorities say the blaze, sparked by a mud pump motor, sent flames 65 to 75 feet high and raged from 6 to 7 p.m. Firefighters and the Lovington department used foamite. Yearwood was treated on scene and later at Lovington General Hospital and returned to work next morning.

Mr and Mrs Dewey Kaslosky of Lamesa prepare stock for the opening of Dewey's Department Store in Lovington. They will keep one Lamesa store and move stock from the other to Lovington.
