Soil Conservation Service experts report over 10 000 acres in Lea County lose topsoil yearly to wind erosion. The program offers free surveys, conservation plans, and measures such as terracing, ditching, planting grass, and windbreak trees to protect land and boost farmer income.
Lovington residents reported a strange fiery object seen in the sky toward Hobbs in the south Saturday around 9 30 p m. Witnesses said it resembled a ball of fire moving south to east and back for about forty minutes before disappearing.
Vic Raschi pitched a two hit shutout as the New York Yankees edged the Philadelphia Phillies 1 to 0 in Game One of the 1950 World Series at Shibe Park. The crowd of 33,500 braved mild football weather and watched a tense start to baseball’s title chase.
Skelt Williams, who has been ill for the past several months, was taken to Lubbock Memorial Hospital Sunday.
Richard L. Shelton paid a $100 fine for driving on the wrong side of the street in Lovington Police Court. J. Masters was fined $25 for being drunk and disorderly. Le Roy Carroll received a $10 fine for drunkenness.

Ernest Simmons, former mayor, is recuperating from shock after killing an antelope on a recent hunt and could not attend Rotary on Wednesday. He plans to attend events in Tatum or Hobbs later in the week once his pulse and blood pressure normalize. Seth Alston spoke on the Horrors of Communism with four guests present.

Vivian A Enke versus Norman D Enke seeks divorce custody support and costs. Cabot Engineering Co applies for solvency certificate under Workmen s Compensation Act. W R Phillips versus Weir Drilling Co and Employers Casualty Co for back injury workers compensation. Ralph Leroy Fox versus Ellen Ern estine Fox for divorce custody with visitation. Mary Payne versus J V Payne for divorce division of community property and costs.
The docket for the October 16 term of district court at Lovington has been set. Judge Roy C. Anderson will preside. Cases include W. B. Bright versus Davidson Drilling Co. and B. B. Scott versus Gene Goodman for divorce. October 17 features Saul A. Yager and Emby Kaye versus A. V. Knight.
An electrical storm hit Lovington Saturday night striking the H. H. Gin. The wall burned and a calender was damaged while the telephone service was knocked out though no serious damage occurred.
Salt Lake City tourist Ray Higgins told Dillon cafe patrons he needed coffee after waking near Dillon. He described crawling from his sleeping bag and discovering a three foot rattlesnake tucked beside his bedroll in the same morning.
A bronze plaque naming Lovington area World War II veterans will be unveiled at McMurry College Abilene Texas on October 10 7 pm in the Gold Star Memorial dormitory for boys The Lovington families attend as Rev W R Houston and others plan to attend Two day ceremonies October 10 11 feature bishops from Houston Dallas Little Rock and Oklahoma City among speakers and campus dedications Contributions from Lovington Methodist Church supported dormitory rooms in memory of the deceased veterans.
September 27 marked the end of the first formal military training for two Lovington area youths. William Thomas Campbell of Jal and Donald Eugene Smith of Lovington completed indoctrination at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. Campbell joined June 30 1950 and Smith July 7. Campbell is a former Electra High School student and Smith studied at Springer High School.
Reports from Hobbs state Navy Hospitalman Murray M. Bowen son of William P. Bowen of Lovington was killed in action in Korea. His mother is listed as Mrs Lula K. Brown of Carlsbad.
The New Mexico sheriff and police association executive board rejected Beasley's resignation as president and urged him to preside at the Roswell convention on October 23 to 25. Beasley, ex state police chief, faced recent civil rights related conviction and seeks new trial along with co-defendants Apodaca and Sandman. The motions are to be heard in Albuquerque next Thursday.
Fifty former G I s participate in Lovington High School’s agriculture training for World War II veterans funded by the G L Bill. Instructors Montgomery and Love supervise about 25 vets each with on farm demonstrations and three weekly classroom nights, part of a statewide practical farm education program under the State College agriculture department.
State Chairman Ray Rodgers denies a Chavez Democrat split and says Chavez and nephew David Chavez back the party. He claims Mechem has persuaded weak Democrats in the Chavez stronghold to back the GOP ticket. Mechem on Texico cites neglect of rural roads and advocates farm market access, road maintenance, and a new highway plan.
District court actions this week include numerous divorces custody awards and property settlements. Notable rulings include Ellen Fox vs Ralph Fox dismissal of suit and Mary Hardy divorce by default with custody, plus Modest alimony and community property divisions in several cases. The Lovington National Bank and Scyrill Ahuddell cases resulted in monetary judgments or procedural actions.
Attorneys for Hubert Beasley Happy Apodaca and Roy Sandman filed motions for a new trial in federal court Albuquerque set for October 9. Beasley found guilty of torture questioning of an 18 year old murder suspect Sandman guilty of conspiracy Apodaca guilty on both counts in Santa Fe on September 21 in a case linked to the murder investigation of Olinda Coogler near Las Cruces.
Mrs. Johnny Fort and Mrs. Johnny Mae Fort left Wednesday for Lubbock to attend funeral services for Roy Hise of Lubbock. Hise died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Tuesday near Amarillo.

Town Council of Lovington fires Police Chief Jack Hadderton and appoints former Sheriff Joe Black to take over on October 15. Reports say Police Commissioner Kenneth Scoggins was not consulted and Mayor Richards along with Councilmen A C Holder and H D Schenk may be involved. Two-week notice was reportedly refused, leaving a temporary police shortfall until Black can assume command. Black, runner up for the Democratic Sheriff primary last year, recently built a home in Lovington and now lives on a ranch nearby with wife and two schoolgoing children.
Joe Price of the Lovington Police Force has directed traffic at Lovington School this week and is favored by the children for his helpful conduct.
In Whitehall Wisconsin tenants of Mr and Mrs C Andrew Kuhn raise the rent from 40 to 50 dollars starting September stating high taxes as the reason. Kuhn said he has no objections.

In Santa Fe Governor Thomas Mabry ordered the removal of a terra cotta nude titled Miss Fertility from the building’s new 777000 dollar capitol addition. He objected to controversy while allowing a reclining nude panel to stay. Artist William Longley criticized the piece and hinted at an appeal to Artists Bounty.
