A local high school freshman, Bobby Doyal, confessed at the county courthouse to killing his mother and half-sister with a 30-30 rifle. Police described his breakdown and tears as he related the account to officers and Reese Greaves, the radio operator, in the court house jail area.
In Lea County a prairie dog poisoning program is planned for June or July. J Edward Barker of the State Fish and Wildlife Service said ten ranchers have registered. T C Perkins at the county courthouse handles requests. Steam crushed oats with 1080 are used. two ounces per 190 pounds of oats. Large tracts are done from horseback, small plots walked. ranchers provide labor. About 90 to 95 bait traps per pound of poison grain.
In a pair of suits against the State of New Mexico and State Engineer John Bliss, Judge C Roy Anderson ordered all parties to submit proposed findings of fact and conclusions of law within 10 days. A decision is due 20 days after May 20. Lawrence sought wells in Kowles community since 1949 but was refused for lack of water. the state engineer had earlier said enough unappropriated water existed for 1,080 acres. Cooper also sought wells in the same area. legal action followed the engineer’s subsequent reversal regarding Lawrence.
The State Game Commission convenes Monday at the state capitol to name a new chairman to replace Roy Carey fired last month by Governor Ed Mechem for incompetency. Henry Brown of Carlsbad is the interim choice. Game Warden Elliott Barker plans to resign July 1 as Mechem signals continued reshuffles.

The old Lea County jail was turned over to Lovington by the County Commissioners after Sheriff Trimble said it was vacated. Lovington will use the facility to house its prisoners. A lease for the Lea County Airport cafe and lounge was presented offering the county 3 percent in year one and 5 percent in year two and thereafter. The Airway Lounge cafe opened in late 1952 with the cocktail lounge opening in February.
United Press reports about 30,000 New Mexico fishermen are expected for the season opener north of US Highway 66. State Fisheries Director Fred Thompson notes streams will be up but not bank to bank and advises anglers to bring bait and gear. He warns if cold weather continues fly fishing may be poor and cites high winds and cold, clear waters ahead, with the northern season opening before dawn at 3:52 a.m.
About 5,000 New Mexico high school seniors will graduate this week, a state record, while the Department of Education warns of no relief for crowded classrooms. An estimated 20,000 new students may enroll next fall, leaving total public school enrollment near 180,000.

Jack L Love from Albuquerque will join Robert Dow in the Lister building as associate. A 1944 Lovington High graduate, he earned a UNM degree in 1952 and was admitted to practice in 1953 after Navy service. He is the son of Mr and Mrs John Love of Lovington.
The Thirteenth U S Civil Service Region seeks applicants for substitute clerk or substitute carrier at Lovington Post Office. Starting pay is 1.61 dollars per hour. Max Cantrall as chief plaintiff sues American Builders Inc and Frea Sproll Jr to foreclose a labor and material lien and damages for breach of contract on 26 houses in the high school addition.
Clovis Mayor challenges Amarillo Mayor Bud Curtis to a Milkin Contest. The event will start at 10:00 a m on Main Street with Gov Mechem and Miss Clovis as judges.
New Mexico Young Republicans plan a state convention on May 23 in Albuquerque to elect new officers and select six delegates to the national convention in Rapid City June 11 to 13. Santa Fe Rep Merrill Johns estimates about 260 young Republicans will attend.

At a faculty meeting in Llano Elementary, Supt H C Pannell announced Jim Henry as principal of both the old and new Llano elementary schools on the main campus. Henry is Lovington native, 1943 Lovington HS graduate, Army veteran, Sul Ross College alumnus with BA and MA, three years teaching in Lovington, recently bought a home near the high school, married with one daughter Jan aged four.

Regular and substitute carriers need proper addressing to deliver promptly. Obtain a form card at the postoffice to notify publishers of address changes.
R A Gaskins announced Albuquerque would host the New Mexico Petroleum Industries Committee annual convention on Oct 15 16 and 17 1953. Headquarters will be the Alvarado hotel with programs and entertainment planned for several hundred attendees.

Major Robert W. Wollard died at Lackland Air Force Base hospital in Texas last week after a nervous breakdown. A former Hobbs attorney and Amarillo Air Force Base advocate general, he had been recalled to service three years ago and was flown to Lackland for rest. He served in the Azores with the Air Force.
The American Federation of Labor seeks to represent 144 Chino Mines Division workers of Kennecott Copper in Silver City New Mexico. Hearings were held by the National Labor Relations Board, with Hurley Mill employees to vote on AFL representation. The Mine Mill union in Bayard currently represents them and was expelled from the CIO years ago amid charges of Communist infiltration.
The youth will be brought before Justice of the Peace John W. Green, likely held without bond.
