Lovington grocery chain Piggly Wiggly reports remodeling across several departments to add space. A 12 by 20 foot insulated meat cutting room with self service nears completion, the first of its kind in town, alongside a new walk in refrigerator. Frozen foods dairy produce and meat will gain room. Beecher Martin says work should finish by week’s end.
The Lovington Lions had the largest representation at the May 10 to 12 convention in Las Cruces. Twenty delegates shared views of the meeting, including Bernard Love Fin Heidel Andy Swarthout and Dick Dailey. Out of town guest P M McNalley of Bartlesville Oklahoma attended with Arnold Heidt, joined by Dr J D Snider Jake Hill and Mr Bell.
Rev. Roy Ross returned Saturday evening from the Methodist Conference in Roswell. The five day gathering ended Sunday with the year’s appointments announced after the morning sermon by Bishop Angie Smith of Oklahoma City. Lovington Methodist lay delegates were P. H. Gamble and Ray Johnson.
Mrs. Andy Moore and her fifth grade class accorded 23 mothers a tea in Room 5 at old Central on Friday May 15. The pink and blue theme featured spring flowers and students presented mothers with cards bearing their pictures. Cookies and punch were served as favors assisted by the students.
Lovington residents will wear poppies on Poppy Day to honor Americans who died in three wars. Commander Cliff Yearwood of Wilhoit-Bataan Post No. 68 calls for participation and acknowledges unpaid volunteers who distribute the crepe paper poppies. Contributions support Legion Auxiliary welfare programs for disabled veterans.
Mayor Philip Robinson proclaims next Saturday as Poppy Day in Lovington offering a War Memorial flower to honor Lovington and Lea County military dead across three wars. American Legion Auxiliary volunteers will distribute poppies and collect donations for disabled veterans and needy children.
During WWI the poppy became a memorial symbol for the war dead and now also stands for heroic sacrifice on the Korean battlefield.
Esteen Tarry of Lovington and Leo Bernard of Mobbs, accounting club members at Eastern New Mexico University, will tour Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories with John B. Jackson on Friday. Separately, John Gillett of Lovington joins ENMU psychology students visiting the Las Vegas Mental Hospital Monday for ward tours and an afternoon staff conference with patient interviews.
Winners of the $5 grocery baskets at Gordon's Cash grocery opening include Mrs Rob Aduddell Mrs Blanche Holcomb L M Blackmon J M Denton Roy Catron Mrs H L Trigg Eddie Ames Mrs J W Love O C Stanbro and M L Stanley. The entrants said it was their first win and Mr and Mrs Gordon praised the turnout and invited more customers to return.
R A Gaskins chairman of the New Mexico Petroleum Industry Committee announced Albuquerque as the site for its annual convention on October 15 16 and 17 1953. Headquarters will be at the Alvarado Hotel. Program and entertainment committees plan for several hundred oil men to attend.
Andy Swarthout of Lovington flies to Dallas after his mother Mrs. George W. Swarthout aged 69 dies. He was at a Las Cruces Lions convention when notified and joined his father in Roswell on business before attending the funeral last Thursday.
W. A. Anderson's ranch hosted a Lovington Band gathering on May 14 with a weiner roast and a hayride. About four members and guests attended the event.
Radio station KLEA announces a staff reorganization to support Lovington growth. Butler Sumner is named assistant manager overseeing local news sales and promotion. Also named program director is Clem Clements with Gilbert Haugen resigning to become electrification advisor for Lea County Electric Cooperative.
May dates list multiple Lovington Police Court actions. James Edgar Teater fined for reckless driving. Sammy Trimble fined for speeding. James Petty fined and jailed for drunken conduct. Richard Anderson fined for double parking and citation avoidance. N. E. Prnnee fined for drunkenness. Henry Morrison fined for no license. A. L. Henson fined for turning at a prohibited point.
Mr and Mrs Joe Witherspoon honored their Sunday School class with a weiner roast at Easleys Twin Lakes on Thursday night May 14 Games were played. Attendees included Coleen Bennett Cloyce Bennett Garnetta Atkisson Retha Robbins Buddy Rowan Art Gill Jerry East D Haggerton Ronnie Moore Joy Nell Joplin Penny Fort Doug Witherspoon Royce Burns Keith Jones.
Lovington logged one of its busiest Sunday nights as a fire siren rang 9 30 p m for ten minutes due to a short circuit. Hundreds flocked downtown to investigate with Main street crowded by cars as city crews hurried to stop the false alarm for the second time.
The Lea County Farm and Livestock Bureau reminds all farmers planning to hire Mexican National labor for the cotton chopping season to submit requests and deposit funds by May 25. The office needs the money to place requests with the Bracero Center so workers are available when needed.
Lea County launches field tests to locate high yielding cotton varieties with early maturity. L. M. Blank from New Mexico A and M leads trials including 30 acres across farms of Sumruld, Benham, and Kings Acres plus plots at McDonald and Lovington with 12 strains and five varieties. Dr. G N Stromar and T C Perkins oversee trials as seedling vigor and blooming dates are monitored amid delayed planting due to winds and cold.
New Mexico residents viewed how their family car might survive an atomic bombing at Sandia Base on Armed Forces Day. Two cars used in recent Nevada Proving Grounds tests were displayed while military installations statewide held open houses and weapon displays to mark the occasion.
Mr and Mrs W C Cox move to Lovington after purchasing the Williams home on First Street and plan to open a dining room at 414 North First Street. Family style meals will be served from 11 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 7 pm starting Tuesday.
Four hundred sixty Lea county residents receive 16424 monthly in old age and survivors insurance. Roswell Social Security office manager J Hassler Strickland noted the office covers a nine county area with Lea third in total payments. Eddy county reports 791 recipients at 26908 and Chaves 660 at 21602 while DeBaca furnishes 50 people receiving 1522. Beneficiaries include retired workers widows children under 18 and parents of deceased workers.
Marjorie Magee answered "The Phrase that Pays" correctly to win six months of breakfast. On May 12 she spoke with Red Benson and a tape recording was made for NBC airing on May 19 at 9 30 a m. Prize includes ham eggs and fruit juice for six months.
Sterling P. Martin aged 53 from Hobbs joined the Lovington Police Department to bring the force to ten members. He succeeds Collie Orcutt who resigned May 1 and brings five years with the Los Angeles Police Department plus years in Clovis law enforcement. Martin plans to move to Lovington and his daughter Mare Genivieve Whitten teaches in Hobbs.
About 250 members attended a barbecue at the Youth Center on Friday night May 15. The event featured barbecue pinto beans onions pickles doughnuts and coffee served to attendees.
