Wool top futures on the New York cotton exchange finished 2 to 8 points up while wool futures gained 3 to 13 points. Standard certified spot tops rose 5 points to 197 nominal as spot Grease wool remained at 152 nominal.
In Chicago the Yankees beat the White Sox 3 to 2 with Ed Lopat earning the win and Billy Pierce the loss. Bob Grim seals the victory with relief. Yogi Berra and Sherm Lollar also figure in the scoring. In Detroit, Marlowe pitches to victory as Kellner loses. Frank Bolling homers for Detroit in the eighth.
Baseball scores show Chicago 9 Brooklyn 3 and St Louis 3 New York 0. Two night games Cincinnati at Pittsburgh and Milwaukee at Philadelphia. American League tied Cleveland 5 Boston 5. Washington at Baltimore scheduled as a night game.
Jerry Lee Martin, a 13 year old Portales youth who lost his adopted parents, has moved in with Mr. and Mrs. William R. Benson of San Jon. The Bennsons, close friends of the Martians, kept Jerry with them while his mother taught and he completed the school year. they also have a 2 12 year old son.
District Judge Roy Anderson presided in Lovington as the Lawrence Cooper water dispute moves toward Carlsbad next week. Attorneys G T Hanners Howell Spear and former justice C R Brice represent Lawrence. Joe Walton represents Cooper. the state is led by Charles D Harris.
The county treasurer's office in the County Courthouse closed on Tuesday while other offices remained open to 5 pm. Miss Eva Tatum, county clerk, could not attend from her farm eight miles northeast of Lovington, yet deputies kept operations going, enabling five couples from Texas to obtain marriage licenses. Assessor, district clerk, sheriff, health office and other units continued business as usual.
The irrigation demonstration scheduled for May 21 at the C A Fort farm has been indefinitely postponed.
Supt. and Mrs. H. C. Pannell will attend the 49th Rotary International convention in Seattle June 6 to 10. More than 25 000 Rotarians and Rotarian Anns will gather at the Municipal Auditorium for the opening, with Pannell chairing the discussion assembly for club committee members.

Announcement says no student pastor is available for the Lutheran Church of Lovington. Rev Emil Krugler will continue to supply Lovington and Hobbs churches. Officials hope to secure a full time pastor by next year instead of a part time worker.

Lovington First Baptist Church hosted a Civic Loyalty League meeting as they circulate petitions for a county wide special election to ban liquor sales. About 60 petitions are in circulation with 26 in Hobbs and a May 24 gathering planned at Calvary Baptist Church in Hobbs to collect signatures.
Rev Krugler of Hobbs announced two films The Tournament of It Uses and The Sickle and the Cross will be shown in Lovington at the Lutheran Church 324 West Ave D Sunday night May 23 at 7 pm. Residents unable to attend due to the storm may view them. Admission is free with a free will offering collected at the end. The Sickle and the Cross is a Hal Roach Studios production featuring a top ranking cast.
Torrential Sunday night rain dumped over four inches in three hours flooding Lovington. Cars were swept and roofs damaged while crops and homes suffered extensive losses. Water filled streets and drifted hail banks as responders patrolled and cleanup began across the town.
Campbell's Farm and Ranch Supply will hold a formal opening for the Tatum store on Saturday. The event invites all to attend with refreshments provided and an old fiddlers contest featured.
The next jury term of court will convene on June 14, 1954. The jury will be drawn on June 8. May 25 has been set as the date to set the jury docket.
