Wanton killing of 12 sheep reported to Sheriff J. McAdoo. M. J. Wiggins said six sheep were shot on Mothers Day and six more one week earlier, all killed with a .22 caliber rifle nine miles north of Lovington. Don Wood and James Robinson investigate.
Ford announces one day shutdown at the Mahwah New Jersey plant affecting 2,600 workers on two passenger assembly lines. Another one day layoff tentatively scheduled for May 29. GMs recalls workers back on Tuesday as others trim output due to weak demand for passenger cars.
In California two 17 year olds killed their mothers as authorities report Francis Ritter admitted killing his mother with an axe after murdering his stepfather with a shotgun over alleged neglect. Chicago police say 15 year old John McKiernan confessed stabbing his mother with a bread knife to steal the family car. In Texas 15 year old Jimmy Roy Knight struck his stepmother with a hammer then shot her and wounded himself.
City police court records indicate ten cases disposed since Friday morning. Fines included Larry J. Pyle five dollars for illegal parking and several others for drunkenness and related offenses. Additional cases feature drunken and disorderly conduct plead guilty for H E Webb and driving offenses for R D Watson. Chrysler extended a two day shutdown, Ward's Automotive Reports cites recession factors and 1957 model price expectations. United Steelworkers in Pittsburgh finalize contract demands ahead of negotiations due by June first.
A man labeled the plane saboteur told the court he did not want to appeal his case. He will be executed in late August for bombing an airliner that killed 44 people. The judge urged his attorneys to discuss whether an appeal should be pursued.
Elmo R. Williamson, 39, of 918 W Monroe cited for failure to yield after his auto collided with a scooter at Avenue B and 7th. Michael Brinkley, 901 Jackson, operator of the scooter, was not injured. Williamson claimed sun glare hindered his view as he traveled west on B. The 6 10 p.m. crash prompted police response.
The government awards a $300000 contract to Airborne Instruments Laboratory of Mineola NY to conduct a full scale study of American aviation facilities for the next twenty years. The work will be supervised by Presidential Assistant Edward Curtis and done in cooperation with Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory of Buffalo NY and the Aeronautical Research Foundation of Boston.
An explosion at a top secret Oak Ridge Tennessee facility killed a second worker. The blast involved drums of scrap zirconium used in atomic reactor development projects and occurred Monday.
State Corporation Commissioner Ingram B. Pickett began a personal check of May 8 returns in the gubernatorial race. He audits votes from the 920 divisions with help from his secretary and possibly his wife, comparing gubernatorial totals to other races and planning on-the-spot surveys in Lea County over alleged late polls. Evidence gathered will be presented to the State Canvassing Board ahead of its May 23 canvass.
Funeral services for Rodney James Howard infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Ruben C. Howard of Tatum were announced. Rev. Ovel Boteler will conduct the service at eight a.m. with burial in Lovington Cemetery. The baby was born May 13 in Lovington and died May 15.

Governor Averell Harriman announced from Cody Wyoming that he is a full-fledged Democratic presidential candidate. Wyoming Democrats elected 28 convention delegates 12 Harriman men to cast half votes each, marking a notable outside-NY bloc. Harriman spoke in Butte Montana and planned Spokane Washington appearances Tuesday amid Eisenhower Kefauver Nebraska primary focus.
The State Parole Board considered 14 pardon applications at a Monday Santa Fe meeting. Governor Simms requested the reviews and will announce decisions later. Virginia honors its last Civil War veteran Uncle John Salling of Sant on his 110th birthday. A delegation of Virginia State Troopers presented him a 10 gallon Texas style hat and a grey shirt. President Eisenhower signed legislation authorizing Coast Guard inspections of motor or sailing vessels carrying more than six passengers. The change aims to prevent disasters like the Levin J Marvel sinking in Chesapeake Bay last August that claimed 14 lives. Previously vessels 15 gross tons or less and sailing vessels 700 gross tons or less faced only minimum safety rules. The law now requires inspections for passenger-carrying vessels with more than six passengers.
Fort Lee, Va. Pvt. Ira R. Keys, 22, completed an eight week supply handling course at the Quartermaster School. He trained to load and unload supplies operate material handling equipment and aid in receipt storage issue sale and salvage of materials.
