United Press reports Britain is developing a nuclear device and conducted an atomic test on an island off Australia. Observers described a small-yet-significant blast with a mild bang, likened to fireworks, and estimated energy around 25 000 tons of TNT. A minesweeper crew noted the blast four seconds early, followed by a hot wind and a pale electric flash.

A 28 year old Hobbs man identified as Z L Wonzer is jailed for parole violation and held for US Marshal transport back to federal prison. Wonzer was arrested in Albuquerque on August 13 1953 on a Mann Act white slavery federal charge.

Carl Shaw of Mosherville hired James Eckert a former Army and Navy diver to raise his car from Devils Lake after it sank through thin ice. Eckert salvaged the vehicle and was paid with the recovered car.

Texan's Body Found At Conchas Lake

The body of 34 year old Dumas Texas man Lee Morrison was recovered from Conchas Lake near Tucumcari after a night time boating collision that killed him two weeks earlier. Skin divers and a Mountainair fisherman located the body as investigators continued to search. Three others were injured in the collision. Morrison's body was being returned to Dumas.

Nuns among 15 dead in Ottawa area jet crash

A Roman Catholic rest home near Ottawa was struck by a jet crash killing 15 people including 11 nuns and a Mother Superior. Earlier toll had reached 19. The jet reportedly hit the building, rockets exploded, and the home burned. Survivors endure severe trauma.
