Russia announces troop cut and challenge to West

The Soviet Union announced a one year cut of 1,200,000 troops and retirement of 375 ships, challenging the United States Britain and France to match reductions. Western officials doubted verification and warned against rapid cuts while warning trained personnel could be reactivated quickly.

Armed Robbery Stages Theft From Hobbs Motel Operators

Two young men robbed Luther and Mrs. Cooper at the Silver Dollar Motel near Hobbs late Saturday. They took 400 from the husband and 600 from the wife and fled in the Coopers 1954 Oldsmobile. The car was found abandoned in Odessa and fingerprint tests were inconclusive. Roadblocks were set across the south plains with no arrest by Monday morning.

Drunken Drivers Cause Two Hobbs Auto Wrecks

Drunken driving caused two Hobbs accidents over the weekend leading to $575 in damage to four cars and two arrests for DWI. The first crash at Marland and South Turner involved James A. Lemmons and Anthony J. Moceri with no injuries. A second collision on South Turner involved Joe Dean Carlile and Dick Taylor. Carlile was also arrested for DWI.

Seven Die In New Mexico Weekend Traffic Toll Rises

Seven people died in New Mexico highway crashes over the weekend. The toll includes Milburn Herring and family from Albuquerque, Anasticio Zamora, Prince KenZhuma, and Antonio Paradiso among others. The year’s traffic deaths reach 119, 18 more than the same period last year.

Final Rites Held Saturday For Lonnie Phillips

Lonnie Oscar Phillips pioneer resident of Lea County was laid to rest Saturday in Lovington. Born February 6 1880 in Franklin County Georgia he died May 12 at his Lovington home after a long illness. He was a retired rancher who moved to Lovington 22 years ago. Surviving are three sons Ted Dale and W B Phillips of Lovington three daughters Mrs B D Davenport Hagerman Mrs J O Irving Tulsa and Mrs Elmer Peppler Denver eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Casketbearers named Hobby Gann Floyd Greer C C Chambers Lois Smith Joe Havener and George Shoup.

Rev Leon Rice delivered the baccalaureate address at Lovington School gym on Sunday evening. His topic was Cast Ye the bread upon the waters as the glee club performed four numbers under director Mrs Charlene Dennis. Invocation by Rev EE Hamilton and benediction by Rev Gordon Garlington.

Rampaging Weather Twisters Leave Midwest Destruction

Tornadoes battered parts of Ohio Pennsylvania Kansas Missouri Nebraska and Michigan killing at least 11 people and injuring scores. A Flint Michigan tornado killed three including Mr and Mrs Louis Hubard and wounded their six to seventeen year old daughters. Flood threats persisted as Flint River rose while heat waves hit the East at Fordham University.

Robbery chase across New England and New York ends in mower escape

In New England a robber fled on a powered lawn mower with two accomplices escaping in a high powered car. In New York three robbers fled in a luxury sedan after stealing a $10 000 payroll from a stevedoring firm, a guard fired his pistol. In Quincy Massachusetts three men escaped a bank holdup with four to five thousand dollars. One mile away two used a powered mower to flee across a golf course. police bullets wounded one, the other escaped on foot and a third hid in a swamp before police detained a nearby man.

Tatum FFA Rodeo Opens Friday at Tatum Arena

The Tatum American Legion Arena hosts the Annual FFA Rodeo starting Friday at 2 p.m. Twenty entrants have paid fees for a two day event featuring calf tie down, ribbon roping, bull riding, girls barrel races and bronco riding. Entry deadline is close of school Thursday.

Hammarskjold says Middle East peace rests with Israel and Arab neighbors

UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold said peace in the Middle East depends on Israel and its Arab neighbors with support from major powers. He noted the UN Security Council must decide next steps as tensions rise in Gaza and Egyptian forces shelling near the Strip were reported with no casualties.

Lost purse reported by Mrs Cleve Ailes at church

Mrs Cleve Ailes of 405 W Roxana Hobbs reported her purse lost or stolen at the Methodist Church on Sunday. The purse contained house keys personal papers and six dollars in cash.

Two men post bond after Saturday fight arrest

John M. Perry aged 32 of Sea graves Texas and Jimmie Lewis aged 25 of the Brooks Hotel Hobbs posted bonds of 25 dollars on fighting charges after arrest Saturday evening. Lewis was fined 15 dollars on a guilty plea Monday morning and Perry forfeited his bond for failing to appear at arraignment.

Two Seamen Die In Ship Collision Off Point Sur

Two seamen were killed when the 2500 ton Olson split in two after colliding with the 10000 ton Marine Leopard off Point Sur near Monterey California early Monday. Coast Guard says 24 Olson crew rescued one critically injured. Leopard took no water and reported no major damage.

Little League Meeting Tuesday Urges Volunteers

Little League managers directors and sponsors will meet Tuesday night in Firemen's Hall to plan the coming season. The meeting starts at 7 30 with the opening game less than two weeks away on Monday May 28 and officials still need volunteer help for the program.

Luella Feltz won the senior Jaycee Talent contest with song and instrument accompaniment. Carol Jean Blue, 11, won the younger class with acrobatic roller-skate dance. Richard Taylor and Joe Alvarez placed second and third in juniors. Clyde Matherly and Freddie Harkey followed in seniors.

Three McDonald Men Fined After Theft Arrests

Three McDonald men Bruce Brown 23 Antonio Merano 21 and Carlos Martnez 24 were arrested by city police for theft from a car. The items beer and clothing were found in Brown's car though Brown claimed he slept and someone else planted the goods. Judge Green reduced charges to drunkenness and fined the trio.

Harriman Criticizes Eisenhower on Air Strength in Denver

New York Governor Averell Harriman stopped in Denver en route to Cody, Wyoming, charging President Eisenhower has failed to tell the public the truth about U.S. air strength versus Russia. He warned Democrats must keep civil rights campaign pledges or risk defeat in November. He spoke at a Colorado Democratic luncheon and said Eisenhower has been less than candid about national air power.

Lovington City General Fund Hits Profit in April

City reports April shows the General Fund in the black with income of 24 651.36 against expenditures of 19 962.85 while the Utility Fund spends more than it earns by about 2 200. Details list income sources such as occupation licenses and gasoline taxes and expenditures including salaries and repairs. Bank balances across Lovington's banks total over 80 000 with separate fund allocations for street, fire, library, and sinking funds.

Lovington Police Report Shows Fewer Miles, More Citations

April mileage by Lovington officers totaled 6369, a drop of about 2000 from March. The department arrested 14 more traffic violators in April than March while reporting 53 accidents checked and 595 parking meter tickets. Officer Tidwell now manages downtown parking meters and traffic/criminal activity checks.
