Hancock Rites Held Saturday in Hobbs
Mr Peter Lee Hancock died Wednesday night in a Lubbock hospital after a lengthy illness. Born 1866 in Ellis County Texas he moved to the area in 1928 and Hobbs in 1930. He leaves four daughters two sons seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren with services at First Christian Church conducted by Rev Harry Porter. Burial in Prairie Haven Cemetery with Green Chapel in charge.

Sheriff Returns Man From Texas Over Extradition
Sheriff Jewell McAdoo traveled to Austin Texas to obtain extradition papers for Marvin Gentry charged with theft over fifty dollars. Gentry refused to waive extradition. Two co defendants Doyal Jean Gentry and William Henry Miller remain jailed in Lea County on bonds of fifteen hundred dollars. John Perry Taylor, accused of stealing a car in Tatum and abandoning it in Hobbs, was captured in Sherman Texas and is held for New Mexico officers with Deputy Joe Pierce returning him to Lovington.

Lea County Commissioners reduced Hobbs Country Club assessment from 12 500 to 5 000 cutting taxes to about a third of 1953. Land valued at 2 00 per acre and improvements 5 000. Ballot Box Tally Sheets Delayed by Lockup Incident
District Judge C Roy Anderson signed an order opening the ballot box in precinct 100 at Hobbs to retrieve tally sheets. County clerk Eva Tatum notes annual lockups of books or tally sheets, and the sheets were secured in the box on election night rather than mailed to the clerk’s office.

Irrigation Expert To Demonstrate Effective Methods
Ivan Reed of Denver will lead an irrigation demonstration on the C. A. Fort farm 42 miles north of Prairieview on Thursday May 20. Lovington installs 80 new stop signs and two four way stops
Lovington police Chief Joe Price warns motorists to heed 80 new stop signs already erected with 40 remaining next week. Two four way stops on Washington and Avenue A at 7th and 7th join a city wide rollout including 20 yield right of way signs south of Avenue A. Artesia Highway remains a mandatory stop by state law.

Fees Reduced For Contracting Nationals
Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell announced reductions in fees for contracting Mexican nationals under Public Law 78. The per worker fee drops from $6 to $3 effective May 1, and recontracting fees fall from $2 to $1, as the revolving fund allocations are trimmed to prevent surplus before the 1955 sunset.

KLEA Tower Claims Lea County Height Record
The KLEA radio tower in Lovington is completed and aims to become Lea County’s tallest structure. A 500 watt transmitter arrives from Gates Radio in Quincy Illinois and should be in Lovington by Tuesday, with operation on a new frequency planned within 30 days.
