Cyprus Rebels Claim British Soldier Executions

In Nicosia, a Cypriot underground leader under the code name Dighenis alleges two British soldiers were hanged in reprisal for rebel deaths. The men identified as Corporals Gordin Hill and Ronnie Shilton disappeared or were missing last year. He suffers a fractured neck and paralysis, with Joe Macias injured. both were treated at Lea County General Hospital. Barroom brawl ends with arrests in Hobbs

Kenneth Orr was treated for multiple facial cuts and a neck wound after a barroom fight at Wayside Lounge. Robert J. Reynolds and Donna Reynolds were jailed on assault charges. Donna fined 40 dollars and Robert 100 after charges shifted from assault with a deadly weapon to simple assault.

W. O. McFall, father of Mrs. Milt Denton, died Tuesday May 8. Funeral rites were held Wednesday in Quitaque, Texas, with Mr. and Mrs. Denton attending.

Cannery Planned for Lovington Eyes Fall Opening

Lovington set to gain a packing plant after a Friday meeting of vegetable growers and farmers with County agent Jim Guishar in Lea County Electric Cooperative building. About 50 growers signed up for 434 acres of tomatoes with further commitments needed in sweet potatoes and beans to assure packers, Kimbell's Wholesale Grocers of Fort Worth showing interest in construction in Lovington.

Jal High School senior Sammie Ray Beckham won fourth place at the National Science Fair in Oklahoma City. Her biology exhibit highlighted research on living systems. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Beckham of Jal and a native of Lea County.

Youth Held For Window Peeping Near Hobbs

A 15 year old Hobbs boy was held on charges of window peeping after allegedly trying to lure a 13 year old girl to admit him. The juvenile was ordered held for juvenile court action by Juvenile Officer Les Villers and was detained until police arrived to take him to jail.

Lions Elect New Officers In Lovington Club Meeting

Lovington Lions Club held a regular luncheon meeting at Sea Rom where officers for the next year were chosen. A. T. Mhoon was named president with Leo Jones and Curtis Maxey as first and second vice presidents, J. B. Selman as third vice president, J. C. Dodson as secretary, Wayne Taylor as treasurer, Ed Bell as Lion Tamer, Al Savisky as Tail Twister, and F. W. Hall A. L. Hughes and Luc Allan as directors. Hobbs Eunice Buddy Poppy Sale Planned This Saturday

The Hobbs VFW and VFW Auxiliary plan the annual Buddy Poppy Sale in Hobbs and Eunice on Saturday May 12. Mrs Nell Vaughan leads the event with help from the Junior Girls Unit and the Auxiliary members. Proceeds support disabled veterans and their families with a portion paid to veterans in hospitals for the poppies.

Police Seek Hit Run Driver In Hobbs Collision

Mrs. Pearl Ainsworth of 817 S Morris St Hobbs reported her car sustained a 175 damage after a hit and run at Turner and Dunham at 1030 p m Thursday. She said another vehicle ran a red light from Dunham struck and fled east on Dunham. Investigators led by W E Flenniken continued the probe Friday to identify the driver. Mrs Ainsworth was not injured.

Rev. Frank Mathews, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Tatum, was buried in Portales Saturday after services in Tatum. He died Thursday in Lubbock following a short illness.

Irrigation Demonstration Set At Benham Farm Tuesday

A Tuesday event at Marion Benham farm six miles east of McDonald will showcase improved irrigation methods. County agent James Gilstrap explains demonstrations cover furrows flooding and sprinkling with grated pipes for underground systems and siphon tubes for sprinkler setups. 15 Minutes Taken To Catch Escapee

A juvenile detainee escaped from the county jail for about 15 minutes before Deputy Les Villars alerted the office and recaptured her. Sheriff J. McAdoo said she slipped a wire to reach the wall keys and unlock the exit door.

L. O. Phillips died at 7 Saturday morning in Lovingt ington Clinic. Funeral services are pending. Survived by three sons Dee and Dale Phillips of Lovingt and three daughters.
