Progressive farmers turn to grassland farming with intensive use of pasture and forage crops. Bernard Love farm near Lovington reports 200 old ewes on alfalfa and mixed pastures with minimal bloat loss and a strong lamb crop. Wool and ewe condition remain good, with expected two to three alfalfa cuttings.
Jimmy Jones a sophomore from Oil Center competed in the low hurdle contest at Roswell on May 5 and 6.
A 90 year old Lovington resident, H. V. Wright, was assaulted and robbed of his savings and a gun during a home invasion. He lies bedfast at home with facial injuries while deputies and Lovington police pursue leads. minister Garrie Atkison cares for him as the investigation continues.
United Press reports a collision near Centerville Texas between a bus and a truck killed seven school children and left three injured. Ambulance driver Floyd Green says the children died instantly when thrown under a trailer by the impact.
Lovington welcomed the A and A Feed Store as the area Purina Chow dealer announced by J B Rountree. Owners R A Grisham and Alton Chenault plan to offer Purina Livestock and Poultry Chows, sanitation products, and farm supplies with on site custom mixing and soon a spraying service.
Divorces granted between several couples including Mari del Hart and Edward Dow Hart and Jean Simmons Graves and Jack Moran Graves. Maids names restored for Simmons and Eugenia Hankin. Child arrangements include plaintiff custody or summer visitation rights, with specified monthly support of 35 and 75 dollars, and other paired actions.
Three suits for divorce were dismissed. Plaintiffs include Inez Woomach against Harold Womach Charley A Houghton against Thelma Houghton and Willie Mae Moddy against Charlie Moody.
Commerce Department official William Remington testifies before the House Un American Activities Committee denying being a Communist. Reinstated in 1948 after loyalty board clearance, he accuses critics of ignorance or falsehood as Chairman John Wood says new evidence prompts reopening of the royalty case.
John Maragon, previously convicted, received an eight month to two year prison term for lying to the senate investigation of five percenters. He faced a potential twenty year sentence.
Republican Senator Charles Tobey accused officials of the Continental Press Service of concealing damaging facts during testimony to a congressional investigation on gambling syndicates. He charged racing news officials described a major customer as highly reputable despite a prior income tax fraud sentence.
Heavy turnout expected with about 2 350 000 voters in Florida Alabama Ohio and Indiana. Parties nominate candidates for three senate seats 49 house seats and two governorships across the four primaries.
Senator McCarthy charged the State Department with aiding the magazine Amerasia in passing atomic secrets to Russia in 1945. He named Frank Bielaski, a former OSS agent, as a forthcoming witness who will claim department officials aided Amerasia and forwarded bomb data to the Kremlin before Hiroshima. Bielaski is expected to testify in a secret Senate session.
Jay Pinkston bookkeeper for Tidwell Motor Company Hobbs is charged with forging a check on W B Hinton Dallas. Auditors find a shortage of 850 dollars. preliminary hearing to be set to accommodate all. Pinkston left the firm April 28 and is held in county jail on bond.
The Lovington Leader will carry colored comics each week. The weekly schedule shifted so last Friday’s comics appeared in the Tuesday issue. If arrivals delay again they will be in the following Tuesday issue. An airmail letter was sent to the syndicate asking for faster delivery.
Funeral services for Federal Judge Colin Neblett will be held at 2 45 p m at the Scottish Rite Temple in Santa Fe. He died Sunday after a stroke suffered while dining at the Hilton Hotel in Albuquerque. The State Supreme Court will suspend business at noon to enable attendance.
Rueban Robinson, former Lovington resident now living in Hobbs, is jailed on a murder charge after allegedly shooting Addie Mae Smith at her room in the Black and Tan Cafe area. The inquest returned a verdict of death from gunshot wound.
Mrs Ira Jackson of Clyde has been visiting her daughter, Mrs Jackson, during the past few weeks.
Mr and Mrs Bill Price of Denver City visited with Mr and Mrs Buell Price Sunday, sharing a family gathering and fellowship.
June 6 filing window closes for Lea County and Hobbs Lovington districts. F. L. Heidel and Roy Tatum file for state representative and assessor respectively. Several incumbents seek re election while many county posts show no opposition. County commission and sheriff races draw multiple contenders from Hobbs and Lovington amid Democrat slate listings.
Burglars entered Richardson Motor Co. and Barnes 66 Station in Lovington breaking a window and opening doors. About $25 stolen from a Coke machine at Richard's. safe damaged but not entered. At Barnes 66 Station losses totaled about $200 including cash, glasses, and coupons. Sheriff Owens suspects one man. no arrests by press time. Other break-ins reported at Acme Lumber Co. Eunice and Scott's Grocery. Hobbs Jack's Footstore lost cigarettes.

President-elect Lester Alston of the Rotary Club reported on the District Convention held in Carlsbad at the Reatry meeting. Rotarians presenting views included Dr. H. W. Gillett, Bill Anderson, J. E. Simmons, H. C. Parnell, O. G. Dean Jr., and John Campbell. Seth Alston spoke on taxes and government control. Birthdays for James Hobbs, Dale Phillips, R. B. Moore, and Ted Hester were celebrated. Hester distributed cigars for his infant son. Guests were A. A. Kemnitz, J. M. Murray Jr., Grady Thompson, and Dave Neal, all of Hobbs.
C. T. Rice was awarded a judgment against Ernest C. Dowell for 1867 dollars and 65 cents. The court ruled in Rice’s favor, specifying the amount due and potential court costs. The decision records Dowell as the and Rice as the plaintiff in the civil action.
