Riviera Model Home Opens March 14 in Lovington

Lovington Homes presents the Riviera, a model home open to the public March 14 in the Shelton addition. Built by E. J. Mankin and a team of young workers, the project is one of 100 planned in Lovington. The land comes from W. W. Carter. The venture signals Lovington Homes Inc aims to meet a growing housing need with 150 homes planned in the Shelton addition and 10 in Parkview.

Riviera Open House March 14 by Lovington Homes

Lovington Homes announces Riviera Open House on Saturday March 14 starting at noon. Designed by Clayton Melby, the home is one of 150 in Shelton Addition with 2, 3, or 4 bedroom options. Highlights include large kitchens, ample cabinet space, auto washer plumbing, enamel finish, tile drainboard, tile floors, and outdoor living spaces with carport and mahogany doors.

Lovington Port Arthur Oddfellow James Gaupp Celebrates 50 Years

James C. Gaupp, lifelong Oddfellow active in Lovington Hobbs and Port Arthur, completed 50 years in the order with 55 years of continuous membership. He joined Kinzua IOOF Lodge 373 in 1898 moved to Texas 1901 organized Port Arthur Lodge 65 in 1902 and has been honored in Hobbs with a 50 year veteran jewel and tribute by lodge leaders. Gaupp, an oilfield worker and cable driller, has lived in Hobbs 17 years.

Red Cross Drive Totals $1 326 97 in First Lovington Week

In the Northern Lea County Red Cross drive Lovington reports $1 326 97 collected in week one toward a $2 156 quota. County and Lovington units organized with chairpersons for downtown, residential, and outside areas. Town workers include volunteers at banks post office and households citywide through March.

Little League Meeting Set For Friday Evening

A public meeting for all interested in the Little League will be held at The Youth Center at 7 30 P M on Friday night. Films about Little League games and World Series will be shown followed by talks on the committee's past achievements and future plans. Boys age 12 or under and their parents are especially invited.

Slow Day in Court Yields One Case in Lovington

Judge Green's court in Lovington opened slowly with Algha A. Harthcoat fined 25 dollars for disturbing. This was the only case on the docket Wednesday morning.

Free X rays and blood tests offered in Lovington

Mobile unit arrived in Lovington offering free chest X rays and blood tests to residents 15 and over or younger with parental permission. The unit previously visited Tatum and will stay near the courthouse then at the high school on upcoming days. Staff include X ray technician Walter Cummings and serologist Morrison with local chairman Carl Crutchfield guiding the effort.

Divorce Sues James Black. Mary seeks restoration of Etcheverry

Mary Anemone Black files for divorce from James David Black after a 1946 marriage. She requests restoration of her maiden name as Etcheverry and an accounting of funds. The petition lists substantial community and separate property including ranch interests, leases, livestock, crops, bank cash, land and mineral rights, plus various equipment. Black, a former Lea County deputy sheriff, has six children from a prior marriage. Mrs. Black is a noted rodeo performer. The family history notes homesteading near Lovington in the early 1900s.

Drunk Driving Fines Set in Local Court

Rosa Green pled guilty to drunk driving and was fined 100 with a one year license suspension. Three others Williard R. Kent Bertha Mae Wilson and Marvin E. French paid 25 each for riding in a car with a drunk driver. Paul S. Goodwin fined 50 for reckless driving after Lovington Hobbs police watch. B J Walker charged with prowling and continued.

Preliminary Hearing Continued In Torch Case

The preliminary hearing for Hardy Houston Phillips and Otis Carlton Waggoner was continued until Robert Earl Brogdon can testify. Brogdon survived severe burns from an incident on Hobbs Highway and is recovering at Lea County Hospital. The defendants pled not guilty and were unrepresented.

Drive for Lea County Farm Bureau membership underway

A kickoff dinner at the Lea Room drew about 50 people as Lea County Farm Bureau launches a drive to reach 505 members, up from 400. Local leaders described dues use, planned cotton classing and grading efforts, a cotton insect program, road signs, and a state wide push with $15 prizes for top recruiters.

E M Peck Resumes Dentistry Practice In Hobbs

Dr. E M Peck a doctor of dental surgery resumes practice and opens a general dentistry office at 1004 North Cochran Hobbs. He and wife and two sons recently returned from Colorado Springs where he served in the army at Camp Carson. He previously ran a Hobbs office before moving to Colorado.

Southeast New Mexico Girl Scouts hold Area Board Meeting in Lovington on March 17 starting at 9 30 A M in the First Baptist Church basement. Registration and name tags from 9 30 to 10 with Hobbs helpers, leaders from Jal assist, programs from Carlsbad, discuss groups 10 00 to 12 00, luncheon 12 with Methodist Ladies, and a 1 PM cookie week opening siren.

Sheriff Fails to Identify Torch Murder Suspects

Sheriff T. J. Hutchison of Sonora Texas traveled to Lovington to identify Otis Carlton Waggoner and Hardy Houston Phillips in connection with a February torch murder attempt. He joined the father of a boy murdered in Sonora but could not identify the two men held for the incident.
