Bob Compton, convicted cattle rustler, remains in Lea county jail on charges of stealing dynamite from oil companies in the area. A preliminary hearing last week bound him over on a $2,500 bond. He previously faced two four to five year terms for stealing two calves from the Victoria Land and Cattle Company in 1950 while foreman of the Tod Hunter ranch. His brothers in Texas sought release on bond to recover an $18,000 cattle bond in Silver City, but he was released on bond pending a supreme court appeal that was denied. Officials say Compton will not be allowed to leave Lea county for Silver City while in custody.
One Stop Hereford Association names Ed Holt mayor of Tatum as president for another term. H D Burns and Al Woodburn of Roswell remain vice presidents. Board members re elected for three years include Burt C Rey Joe James and Frank Crockett. Two year terms go to R A Boyd and J T Easley with Al Woodburn and H J Burns also noted.
Funeral services were held Monday at the First Baptist church for Mrs Ollie D Stephens 79 who died en route to Lea County hospital after living in Lovington nine years. Born January 8 1874 in Henderson County Tennessee she was married to Luther T Stephens in 1892 in Wolf City Texas. She is survived by two Lovington daughters four sons twelve grandchildren nine great grandchildren a brother and a sister. Burial followed at Lamesa Texas with pallbearers named Locally listed men.

Elwood Page, minister of the Church of Christ, is at Lea County General hospital after suffering a heart attack late Saturday. He showed improvement by Monday, with reports noting progress from Saturday and Sunday.
The Hobbs School Board reviews testimony from Friday night hearing on Mrs Eloise Valley who was dismissed pending action. School officials alleged four acts of insubordination including trips with students and a May Day program, while Valley and others disputed control and participation. The case mirrors a prior dismissal of Mrs Pauline McCormick awaiting a judge's decision on a mandamus action.
Lea County officials approved a 1953 54 budget of 1 036 290 for Lea County and Lovington with minor revisions. Lovington budgets show a 72 500 rise to fund a half million gallon storage tank, two new wells and a 200 000 bond financed project to upgrade water and sewer lines. The tank will be above ground near South Love Street and should boost standby water capacity to about half a day.

Antonio Molina Molina a Mexican national 28 died Sunday night when a house on the G D Parker farm north of Hobbs burned. A coroner jury ruled death from burns after an inquest at the scene. Firemen arrived as Parker battled smoke. body to be sent to Mexico.
Lovington Fire Department sent one truck to the city amp Sunday afternoon to extinguish a trash fire reported around 4 o clock.
