Lovington imposes new water rates effective July bills raising commercial minimums to 5 dollars for the first 1 000 gallons and residential to 3 dollars for 3 000 gallons. The town also changes billing dates and penalties after issuing 200 000 in water bonds. Spear wins 1500 state GM award for highway essay.
Bobby Doyle, 14, remains in Chavez county jail on charges of killing his step mother and half sister. He is held without bond with trial set for November. Attorney Finis L. Heidel said no information had been filed in district court yet and he would await the DA’s action. Assistant DA Joe Walton indicated the case might stay in Lea county unless a venue change is announced.
Building inspector George Cowan says Lovington issued $3,132,800 in building permits for 1952 53. June was weakest with 14 dwellings totaling $61,450 and one commercial permit for Sea Engineering at $8,000. February led the year with $528,400.
Lovington town trustees will hold their regular monthly meeting on July 9, per town clerk Osburn Fisher. The notice urges residents to attend and note agenda items for discussion.
A. B. Morgan resigns as district court reporter to attend New Mexico University School of Law this fall. George Downs, reporter for Judge John R. Brand, plans to return home to Dallas once a replacement is found.

The Lovington Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual July 4th fireworks show at the Country club on Saturday night with 20 ground displays and over 150 aerials. The Lovington Volunteer Fire Department runs the event starting after dark. admission is free, with barrels for donations to fund next year’s show. Facilities, pool, and concessions remain open. About 8,000 people attended last year. a larger crowd is expected.
Southern Union Gas Company secured a 25 year franchise to provide natural gas in Tatum by the board of trustees on Thursday June 18. Gas will start after El Paso Natural Gas Company's pipeline passes near Tatum en route to the west coast, with rights of way being bought and the system to be completed by gas availability early next year.
General Telephone Company of the Southwest names Hobbs as a district office in its Western Division, effective July 1, 1953, with J. L. Kemper as division manager and G. D. Shelley as Hobbs district manager. The Hobbs district includes Eunice Hobbs Jal Lovington Denver City Seagraves exchanges totaling 8 796 telephones.
Mayor Phillip Robinson told the Leader a hearing date with the General Telephone Company of the Southwest is set for July 14. The meeting will be at the Town Hall to discuss improvement of service.
A general membership meeting of the Chamber of Commerce will be held at the Lea County Electric Co-op on Monday at 7 30 p m. Several matters will be discussed, especially the telephone situation.
Three Lovington reserve officers will depart Hobbs by bus on July 12 for two weeks of intensive training at Fort Hood Texas. The 50 man unit includes 1st Lieut. Harvey Markly Captain Finis Heidel and 1st Lieut. Dick Pollard.
The Shelton Agency reports G. I. loans will be scarce and that remaining commitments are likely all that will be available for some time, signaling tighter veteran financing.
Bill Snyder of New Mexico A and M college will judge the annual Chamber of Commerce Wool Show to be held Friday July 10 in the Bull Barn upstairs. Lovington 4 H and F F A club members have submitted 38 entries across five fleece classes. Demonstrations include wool blocking and other exhibits with trophies awarded.
