Fatal Lea County Auto Crash Raises 1953 Death Toll

The 11th traffic fatality of 1953 in Lea County occurred Monday night near Lovington. Sadie Sipes of Brownfield died from injuries after a high speed rollover on State Road 83. Her husband James Sipes, driver, was hospitalized under observation. An inquest returned a death from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Emma Jackson to Attend FHA Convention in Columbus

Emma Jackson, a Lovington High senior and member of the local F H A chapter, will leave Lovington June 30 for the National FHA convention in Columbus, Ohio. She is one of 20 New Mexico delegates and will travel via Alvarado hotel in Albuquerque and the El Capitan through Chicago to attend July 2 to July 7.

Compton Moves to Pen After Final Upheld Sentence

Bob Compton has been moved from Lea county jail in Lovington to New Mexico State Penitentiary in Santa Fe to serve two concurrent 4 to 5 year terms. The May 19 final decision denied rehearing. He was jailed for stealing two truckloads of dynamite from a Lea county oilfield company.

Lovington town trustees approve a consolidated water department bond issue to raise 200000 dollars. The special meeting convened around 6 PM due to late quorum.

Old Folks Day at Prairieview School Big 27th Reunion

Prairieview hosts Old Folks Day with a 27th reunion on Sunday June 28. A school bus will run at 9 a.m. from the courthouse, and a barbecue pit, basket dinners, music, and a memorial service are planned. Lea County Tomato Crop Threatened

Lea County tomato plants are believed infested with Western Yellow Blight or Curly Top. New Mexico A and M specialists Gibbs and Mr. Dobson arrived to inspect. If unaddressed, farmer losses could reach 20 000 to 30 000 with market value near 200 000. Plowing up the crop may allow a grain sorghum replacement.

Lovington Budget Shows Major Increase Proposed for Next Year

Parker Drilling walloped Frontier Oil Co. 17 7 in seven innings in Denver City Tuesday night. R J Ledet R T Reynolds Fred Phillips and Wv H Boteler hit homers as Parker racked up 22 hits while Frontier managed seven. Reynolds pitched for Parker and Calkins for Frontier. Parker leads the ton league with five wins and one loss.
