E L Harbison, organizer of Old Folks Day in Lea County, appeals for financial aid as beef prices rise. The event honors residents 60 and over with ribbons, prizes, and a lunch at Prairieview School House, with a memorial for members who have died.
Lea County cotton crops show a promising start with about 50,000 acres planted and supplies of insecticides and fertilizers reportedly adequate. Weather and insect pressure will determine final yields, with projections of at least 25,000 bales for the fiber-hungry market if conditions hold. Rev. Ray Ross pastor of the First Methodist Church was treated at Lovington General Hospital for four broken fingers on his left hand. He injured his hand while trying to start an electric pump at the parsonage.
The Eunice Finance Board approves a 175000 bond plan funded by 8714 of gasoline taxes to pave 52 blocks. A contract with Robert E Schwazer Co is set to back the bonds. The council also funds pipe removal and refilling, drills a new water well, and eyes a welfare officer for child welfare amid a calculated protest next week.
The Lovington Chamber of Commerce launches a membership drive after reorganizing with temporary officers J M Whitworth and Floy Wynn set to lead. The effort aims to boost trade territory and growth through projects from paving and zoning to a modern airport and rural urban relations.

LOS ANGELES UP Ameri can Legion National commander Erle Cocke Jr says Iran, not Korea, poses the greatest danger of World War. He says Russia could not launch a war without Iran oil and that Korea stalemate means UN withdrawal is not the answer. He urges bombing bases in Manchuria, a China coast naval blockade, and Kai Shek troops for service.
Mrs Ira Townsend and her son Kent from Jacksonville Florida are visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Joe Havener in Lovington.
Lovington attorney G T Hanners heads to Carlsbad to confer with George Reese who has been retained to represent Monument in opposing the consolidation with Hobbs. A suit is planned to be filed by July 1 when consolidation would take effect. Hobbs board president Paul Brown reportedly may resign to allow Monument representation.
Denver official Michael DiSalle announced a government price rollback on most wearing apparel within days. He notes clothing will be included except textiles and says nationwide prices are leveling off, with this rollback likely one of the last major controls to be enacted.
Mrs. Madeline Hunsperger of Philadelphia writes to President Truman asking that her son Russell receive a new uniform waistline. She notes the Air Force issued pants last January are too tight and cannot be let out, even as her son is stationed at Presque Isle Maine and has gained weight.
Co. J. Baker sold the Baker Drug at Tatum to Frank Smith of Fort Stockton Texas. Baker is in Hobbs with his ailing wife and has no immediate plans.
Eunice area insurance adjusters praised the community for cooperation and honesty noting low larceny and heavy losses. They said they will reach all residents but have been kept busy and urge continued patience from the public.
The Internal Revenue Service in Albuquerque identifies 176 alleged racketeers in New Mexico. Collector S P Vidal says 16 agents are pursuing possible federal income tax violations. Fourteen gamblers bookies and racketeers are under active investigation. He doubts any big time operators exist as the state offers small pickings.
The House Veterans committee approved a bill to provide free automobiles to Korean War veterans who lost a limb or sight and to World War I and II veterans who are blind or amputees. Current eligibility limits to leg amputees.
Word comes from Lovington that Walter Tomlinson of Truth or Consequences, brother of L. O. Tomlinson of Lovington, is critically ill at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque.
Mr and Mrs Woody Inman and their children relocate to Carlsbad where Mr Inman will oversee a new abstract company to operate in the cave city. The move marks a fresh business venture following their departure from prior location.
