The clerk's office notes Lea County tax valuation for 1954 exceeds 130 million dollars as the budget for the next fiscal year begins July 1 1954 and runs through June 30 1959. Last year’s valuation was about 116.72 million, an increase of 13.28 million.
Town officials met Tuesday night and authorized Bob Ward to draft a complete new code covering all municipal government aspects. A trash on streets ban is in effect with citizens urged to place waste in alleys for efficient pickup. O R Castleberry resigned from the police force.
The Lovington Chamber of Commerce directors endorsed the first Monday of each month as Dollar Day. Merchants are urged to offer attractive prices to encourage local shopping and residents to check Dollar Day values in papers before buying elsewhere. The meeting covered hotel plans and routine business. Those present included Roger Smith and Mary Payne plus other directors and visitor Ford Cooley.
The State Highway Commission will open bids June 25 on seven highway projects totaling about 1.5 million dollars. Projects include six miles of new road bed and paving on U S 70 between Roswell and Border Hill, repair work on U S 285 around Artesia, and similar work on state road 83 near Eddy County. Also let are paving and a bridge on US 70 80 between Las Cruces and Fairacres for about 400 thousand dollars and eight miles of blacktopping from Ruth to Hollene in Curry County.

County extension agent T C Perkins urges farmers to have dusting and spraying gear ready to act on short notice. Immediate action is vital once pests appear. he lists four checks: spare parts, pumping operations, hose connections with chemical resistant rubber, and cleaning nozzles and the entire spraying system.
A five foot iguana captured near Las Cruces after a family reported a dragon like creature on their Rio Grande Valley farm. Captors roped it and plan to fatten it for a TV appearance before stuffing it for display. officials doubt natural arrival in New Mexico.

Amerada defeated Green Bros. 7 0 in the first game as Haney, ranked a top pitcher in 1953, tossed a no hitter for Amerada. Green Bros. came back to win the nightcap 3 2 with Donald Camp pitching and Sonny Williams catching, Camp driving in two runs in the sixth to tie the game before Lingle plated the winning run.
The four state welfare institutions now cost about two million dollars yearly. Fort Stanton Medical Center spends over 56,000 dollars monthly in Lincoln County, while Socorro TB Sanatorium uses about 75,000 dollars per month. Meadows Home for the Aged costs reach 29,000 dollars monthly and El Mirado Home 14,000. Last year costs at the three latter homes rose about 60 percent, with the Welfare Department taking over Fort Stanton hospital last July.
On June 12 O Hart investigated a loud noise behind the TV Center and found a back door open. Officers Addison and the team arrived, suspects fled through the front. Cicero Smith Lumber Company also reported a break-in with nothing missing.
Harry S. Kiefer was tried on a DWI charge and fined 100 dollars with license revoked for one year. J. D. Pinkerton was fined 15 dollars for failure to yield right of way. Hart was the arresting officer.
Donald Joe Jones formerly of The Lamesa Daily Reporter becomes Circulation Manager of The Leader to assure subscriber service. He will aid Mary Hamzy in Advertising and focus on service to old subscribers and acquiring new ones. Jones, a former Marine at Camp Pendleton from 1951 to 1953, attended Texas Tech and worked for Mead's Bread in Lubbock, began his duties Thursday. He replaces Mrs.Florence Freeman.
Bear Canyon Lake will be planted with trout later this season after removing other fish. Bass bag and size limits at that lake will be lifted after July 1. Announcement came from the State Game Commission meeting on June 7.
Ed Driver a former school friend of Mayor Jack Underwood will assist Underwood until he has been a resident of New Mexico six months and can pass the bar exam. Driver attended the University of Oklahoma and earned an LLB from National University in Washington DC. He served in the 10th Armored Division in World War II and was stationed in Munich. He practiced law in Washington DC and served as attorney for the Independent Taxi Owners. Mrs Driver will be in Lovington about June 20.
The schedule at Lions Park lists games from June 15 to June 17. June 15 features a double header with Green Bros versus Parker Drilling and City Drug against Atlantic Seis. June 16 offers City Drug versus Atlantic Seismic, followed by June 17 with Magnolia Production versus Haliburton and Magnolia Seis versus Green Bros.
Dean Robert A. Nichols of the agriculture school at Texas A&M has been assigned to help create an agriculture college at a Pakistani university. He plans to depart the week of June 21 for the assignment. The Pakistan institution currently offers arts and sciences programs.
Parker Drilling won 13 to 1 over Magnolia Seismic at Lions Park with Spradling pitching and Breaux catching. L. C. Cozzens, R. Tracey, and Spradling homered as Parker notched their third win of the season while Magnolia pitcher Bishop allowed 10 hits and three errors. Green Bros. topped Mallamar 10-5 the same night.
The U S Office of Education allotted 228 500 dollars for Farmington school construction to start a new high school building this summer. Superintendent La Moine Langston notes the project is part of a half million dollar plan and that the appropriation is about 130 000 dollars below the request.
A Madison motor firm faced attention for a used car advertisement referencing the recent push for a recall election against Senator McCarthy. The ad headline read We don't know whether Joe should go but these cars must.
Sunrise to sunset will be the 1954 hunting hours as announced at the State Game Commission meeting this week. Hunters are urged to note the change from previously published hours.
Governor Ed Mechem lauded cotton as a key New Mexico agricultural commodity at the Cotton Ginners Association convention. Former champion Ezzard Charles says he will regain the title against Rocky Marciano, with Lou Nova and Charles citing height reach speed and experience as key edges. Charles trains at Monticello as co-manager Tom Tamas notes a 188 pound weigh in and 128 sparring rounds since May.
