Two Leave for Girls State in Albuquerque
Miss Pegey Holloway and Miss Jackson depart Saturday for Girls State in Albuquerque. Jackson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Jackson, held FHA secretaryship, NHS member, cheerleader, junior class and FHA vice president, and acted in the junior play. Holloway, daughter of Mrs. Marie White, led FHA in 1952 53, praised as best club worker, NHS secretary, and junior play cast member. Also going are Lovington students Earl Hester, Bill Shivers, and Ed Mitchell for Boys State. Shivers to be Senior class president next year. Hester to lead Student Council. Mitchell recently earned math honors. Mitchell lives 19 miles from Lovington.

Funeral services were held at Jal Methodist Church for Mrs. Nannie F. Whitmore Beckham on May 31 1953. Born August 14 1885 in Little Rock Arkansas she died May 30 1953 at her Jal home. Survived by son Sam Beckham Jal daughter Mrs Alford Eaton Odessa and three grandchildren. Burial followed at Cooper Cemetery.

Hobbs Country Club Taxes To Be Figured
The Hobbs Country Club has not been billed for back taxes for 1948 1949 1950 and 1952. The county treasurer will determine the interest 1 percent per month until paid while awaiting the district attorney's decision. The club paid 1951 tax and interest and plans an appeal to the state's attorney. A 1952 assessment suit filed in district court by Assistant District Attorney Joe Walton remains active. District Attorney Pat Hanagan declines further comment.

Three and a half month old Paula Willine Norrell of 322 East Ave A Lovington was smothered Tuesday night when her head wedged between a bed and a windowsill. An inquest returned an accidental death verdict. Survivors include maternal grandparents and a Texas-based family. funeral set in Brownfield June 3.

Effie Meroney Receives Two College Degrees at Howard Payne
Mrs Effie C Meroney earned both B S and B A degrees from Howard Payne College on May 22. Attendees from Lovington included Mrs Effie Meroney and several relatives. Charles Fairweather traveled from Washington DC to celebrate his mother’s graduation. The widow’s late husband died in a 1946 Lovington airplane crash. She has offers to teach in Texas and New Mexico but has not chosen a move date or place.

Culp Acquitted of DWI Charge
Herman Culp of Lovington was acquitted by District Court Judge John Brand on driving while intoxicated charges. The judge directed acquittal after finding the man innocent, with defense by Col. Brownfield Girl Injured in Car Accident
Three year old Glenda Dunn of Brownfield Texas suffered two deep head cuts when she was thrown against a windshield after a car rammed into another at Easley’s Lake exit. The child was in a car driven by Alfie Puryear. others in the vehicle were her mother Rachel Dunn and two siblings. Mrs Boyd Griffin transported the girl to Lovington General Hospital for first aid. No others were hurt.
