Lovington Mathematician Wins Contest Honors
Edd Mitchell, Lovington High School junior, won top honors in a local mathematics contest sponsored by New Mexico educators and the Southwest branch of a math association. Seventeen Lovington pupils took the test. fourteen placed in the upper forty percent of 1,188 contestants. thirteen earned Certificates of Proficiency from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Tractor splits. boy in head injury after crash near Lavington
A 9 year old, Coy Wayne Fisher, was thrown from a tractor and injured when a Ford car clipped his father's tractor five miles south of Lavington early Thursday. He was taken to Lea County General Hospital with a head injury. Driver John Kapvianus, 1952 Ford, said he was traveling north at about 65 mph. The tractor stood four and a half feet from the center line. Kapvianus was uninjured.

Memorial Day observances at Lovington Cemetery featured decorations by the Lovington American Legion and the VFW post in Hobbs. Local leaders including Lyle Gholson and L. C. Green oversaw wreaths, with Phillip Robinson placing a wreath at the memorial and John Campbell delivering a prayer. Leslie Gillett sounded taps as the service began with the Star Spangled Banner. Six trucks owned by C. J. Simpson of Dallas were cited in Justice of the Peace Court Lovington for excessive overhang while transporting pipe from Denver City on Highway 83. Inspector A H Dees and L E McHan arrested the drivers. Judge John Green fined each truck $30, totaling $180. county share $30 and state share $150.

The next shot could be the grandaddy of the 31 U S tests with an explosive yield at least twice the 20 000 ton World War II A bombs and may be an air drop. State School Budget Auditor Endorses Near 44 Million Approval
State School Budget Auditor O. J. Holder approved school budgets totaling near 44 million dollars, a record high. The increase of about 5 million over the current year funds added teachers and pay raises. Base pay for teachers rises from 120 to 200 dollars in most counties while Curry Harding and Quay counties see a 100 dollar boost and Sandoval county receives no raise. Salary adjustments in six other counties raise mean pay to 400 to 600 dollars in Bernalillo Dona Ana and about 370 dollars in San Miguel Lea Eddy and Chaves counties.

Lightning Downed Power Lines Plunge Lovington into Darkness
An electrical storm struck Lovington Sunday night knocking out street lights across the town. Lightning hit power lines four to five times causing widespread outages mainly along Main Street near the courthouse. Crews restored service by 9 30 p m with R B Moore and F B Hailey coordinating operations and Pat Patton freed from mud after his vehicle stuck.

Lovington and surrounds saw 1.36 inches of rain Sunday, the heaviest in months, with several observers reporting varying totals.
