The State Tax Commission approved a county budget of 1,388,968 for the coming year, up from 1,036,890. The 1954 valuation rose to 136,569,113, with funds covering General County, Road, Hospital and other departments. Bonded debt shows 340,000 outstanding across hospital and fair buildings.
Preliminary hearing for B C Whittle on assault with deadly weapon charges was continued after Judge John W Green took the case under advisement. Witness Don Chaney testified the confrontation began over a brief argument and Whittle then struck with a knife, leaving a 2 1/2 inch slash needing stitches. The court recessed for the District Attorney to review testimony for possible further action.
Lea County Commissioners appoint Dorman Brookey as County Extension Agent to start January replacing T C Perkins who resigns August 28 1954. Brookey previously served as assistant County Agent and holds a masters degree. Board notes a bar transfer and a sheriff association invitation to attend the 20th annual meeting.
Last night Clem Clements repelled four would be abductors at his West Ave home in Lovington. The attempted kidnapping left him bruised and unable to pitch for Kiwanis versus Rotary at the local ball park on Monday night. Police seek tips. clues include a torn $20 bill corner and a Rotary emblem fragment.

The preliminary hearing for 71 year old Lewis Ezra Moss facing charges of molesting a minor girl was postponed to July 28 by Judge John W Green. The delay follows Moss appearing without an attorney and the prosecutor agreeing to another postponement to allow counsel. Moss said he would contact his wife and son who live hundreds of miles away. His seven year old granddaughter Julia Sherron Moss is expected to appear as a defense witness per Moss.
Mrs G M King receives a permit to build a 12 by 38 foot frame addition at 109 North 2nd St. The plan adds two rooms and a bath at an estimated cost of 2000 dollars. Roy Throckmorton gets a permit for a 12 by 40 foot masonry shop and warehouse at 218 East Ave H with two rooms and a bath at about 3000 dollars.
The Hobbs National Guard seeks new recruits as the unit with 63 enlisted men and 5 officers plans annual summer camp at Fort Bliss El Paso Texas from August 15 to 29. Eligible applicants must be 17 and may visit the Armory at 419 N Jefferson between 8 AM and 5 PM or call 32861 Sg Teer on duty.

Emitt Starch once mayor of New Hobbs is in serious condition at his El Paso home. He lived in Hobbs 15 years and moved to El Paso in 1945. Minnie Hollis was city clerk during his mayoral years around 1933 to 1935. Starch’s 97 year old mother from La Crosse Wisconsin arrived to be with him. His son in law Bob Brown of Hobbs said he has been ill for some time and the worst is expected.
The Tatum Village School system expects delivery in Aug of a 36 passenger Flexible bus for school activities. Superintendent W. D. Castor notes NM bus experience supports sturdy service in this terrain. He adds the maintenance department is renovating buildings for heavy fall enrollment and six new teachers will join the staff.
