A district report lists new lawsuits since July 20 including custody cases in which parents seek child support and property division, divorce actions, and several civil suits. Notable filings include damages from auto and drilling firms, a $52,000 injury claim, and a $12,304.04 debt suit.
The Texas Democratic primary nears a runoff as 96 percent of votes counted shows Governor Allan Shivers ahead by about 17 000 over Ralph Yarbrough but with two minor candidates keeping him under 50 percent. Congress leaders Johnson and Rayburn win renomination.
President Eisenhower and Republican Congressional leader agreed to keep Congress in session for several more weeks to end the senate filibuster on atomic legislation. The agreement was reached at the President’s White House meeting with Republican chiefs.
Four people injured in an accident Sunday after a large truck driven by Claude L. Shaw of Lovington struck two state owned vehicles set as a roadblock amid three feet of water. Injured include Justice H. N. Rice’s wife, patrolman Melvin McGuire, and workers Cruz Pantano and Nabor Gonzales. Shaw released on $500 bond in Grants.
The year to date traffic toll in New Mexico rises to 188 after a weekend crash near Socorro. Mary Bramente of Fitchburg Massachusetts died when her car left the road and overturned two and a half miles west of Socorro. Five other passengers from Massachusetts were injured.

Silver City officials vow to fight a suit filed before District Judge A. W. Marshall arguing the city traffic court lacks authority to try a drunk driving case after the violation was made a felony by recent legislation. Carlsbad has appealed a similar case to the State Supreme Court currently studying the issues.
Democratic Senator List Hill of Alabama charged that the administration farm program would cut farm income by a quarter and not shift consumer prices much. He warned the 75 to 90 percent flexible support could default if Congress is late. Mitchell announced a Midwest farm conference at Sioux Falls on August 28 with Adlai Stevenson and other leaders.
Miguel Gutierez, 24, in Lea County jail on discharging firearms after two shots were fired from a pistol he used to whip Balderano Hierro, 25. Hierro, head injuries and loss of blood treated at Lea County General Hospital, then returned to a Denver City farm. Hierro declined to sign a complaint. Sheriff says only count would be discharging firearms. Gutierez also contracted to a Denver City farmer.
The Eddy County Bar Association hosted a joint party with Lea and Chaves County lawyers at Riverside Country Club in Carlsbad Saturday evening. A skit by Eddy County lawyers entertained attendees before dancing on the patio after dinner. Attending Hobbs were L. H. Johnson and couples Mack Bailey, N. Randolph Reese, George Schubert, Max Edwards, A. M. Rose, and Lovington’s G. T. Hanners with Judge Harvey C. Markley. all enjoyed the social event.
Representative John J. Dempsey announces an agreement with New Mexico officials on hay shipments as drought relief. The state will pay half the transport cost up to a $20 per ton maximum. The hay will feed livestock, and a separate policy will provide surplus grain for livestock feed.
The Army Store in Hobbs, one of the town’s oldest retailers, has been sold to R. R. Rehm of Albuquerque. Owners J. C. Head announce the transfer set to take effect September 1. Mrs. Head will continue publishing the Lovington Leader and the Hobbs Flare, while Rehm runs Hobbs Plumbing Co. until sale.
A 27 year old Hobbs man Hard Keith Hoyt died when his car failed to make a curve near Price Utah and struck a tree. The wreck was New Mexico's 92nd traffic fatality of the year. A Massachusetts woman about 40 died on US highway 60 near Socorro when her car overturned after she apparently fell asleep at the wheel. Five others were insured.
The State Department reports two U S carrier planes engaged two Chinese Communist fighters after searching for survivors of the Cathay airliner. Secretary Dulles says U S planes returned fire, downing the two Chinese aircraft with no American casualties, condemning Communist brutality and interference with a humanitarian rescue.
Harold Keith Hoyt was killed in a single vehicle crash near Price Utah when his 1953 Ford rolled down a bank and hit a tree. He lived in Hobbs three months and had moved to Price a month ago, employed by Indian Drilling Mud Co. Funeral set for First United Methodist Church in Hollis Oklahoma at 3 30 p m Wednesday. Survivors include aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs Edith Hoyt of Hobart Oklahoma. He planned to marry a Hobbs girl in about two weeks.
Miriam Stevenson, 21, a South Carolina home economics major at Lander College, won Miss Universe 1954 over 33 foreign contestants. She will receive a $250 weekly movie contract, a $4,000 convertible, and other prizes totaling $8,000, with minor concern about losing her southern accent in film work.
The House unanimously voted contempt citations against seventeen persons who refused to testify on communist affiliations before the House Un American Activities Committee. About 300 witnesses have refused to testify since 1953, with twenty six cited for contempt including the seventeen. The committee says these cited were the most abusive of all refusals to testify.
Thirty nine eating houses in Santa Fe were listed as Grade Z eateries during the first three weeks of a city program to improve sanitation. Public Health sanitarian Larry Gordon, with the City Health Department, launched the drive three weeks ago citing population growth as a reason.
County Commissioner Carl Denson says no date or place has been set for a meeting between Eddy and Lea County commissioners to discuss the Jal Carlsbad road. Lea has $210000 allocated for her share while Eddy seeks funds and has moved the project back on the list. The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce invited Lea and Eddy counties and Hobbs Chamber will attend. Jal Chamber was not invited.
