Hobbs suffered a power cut from 6 to 8 Sunday as a Southwestern Public Service transformer short caused grass to burn and cut city lights until 1 AM Monday. Replacement parts were not expected until Wednesday, prompting residents to conserve electricity and water. The Hobbs fire department quickly controlled the grass fire. Two Levelland men suffered minor injuries when their 1949 Buick overturned about 20 miles north of Hobbs on State Road 132 just after midnight. Driver Charles C. Bobo and passenger Sam C. Shelton were treated for cuts and bruises at Lea General hospital and released. State Police say excessive speed contributed. charges are pending.

Camp is a Lovington resident and ex-Hobbs police officer. The Zamorippa murder case, involving Ernest Zamorippa charged with first degree murder in the November 8, 1952 Prairieview death of Eusebio Vasuea Bustamentes, dominated local coverage with repeated legal motions and delays as defense and prosecution battled over witnesses and language issues. Plans are progressing for the Cotton Caravan to visit Lovington on February 28 with 500 to 600 expected attendees.
