Final Rites Held Saturday For Mrs. Ocie May Dean
Funeral services for Mrs. Ocie May Dean were conducted at the First Church on Christmas Day at 2 30 p m with Rev C G Watt presiding. Born March 11 1901 in Anson Texas she died December 24 in Lovington New Mexico. She married Buck Dean November 25 1917 and the Deans moved to Lovington in 1949. Interment followed in Lovington Cemetery. Survivors include her husband three daughters a son her mother and four grandchildren. three brothers and six sisters also listed.

Quiet Christmas Weekend for Fire Department
The Fire Department reported a calm weekend with two incidents. A small grass fire northeast of town on Christmas Eve and a mattress fire at the Main Hotel on Sunday morning.
Lovington Police Get 24 Hour Radio Operation
Lovington Police Department now operates its own 24 hour radio at Lovington Town Hall under Chief C. D. Stout. The force numbers seven with day and night officers including Night Captain Bill White and Night Patrolman A. V D. Williams. The new system cuts relay calls through the sheriff and boosts on duty availability, with officers assisting motorists and other agencies in a busy November report showing 394 assistance calls versus 199 arrests and citations.

The holiday season in Levington and surrounding areas was notably quiet with few arrests, mostly minor charges. In Hobbs, misdemeanors and vagrancy incidents occurred, a gun incident involving a husband and wife was reported, and at Lovington Wade Gunn died from accidental gun wounds while Joe Cheak lost fingers in an accident. Joe Cheak Loses Four Fingers in Oil Field Accident
Joe Cheak of Lovington suffered the loss of four fingers on his left hand in an oil field accident near Mallamar while working at the Anderson Ranch pool. He was taken to Lea County Hospital around 4 15 Christmas Eve. His thumb survived, but the other fingers were severed, according to the sheriff's office.

Lea Gas Lease Brings Highest Bid At Sale
The New Mexico Land Office sold leases on 18 400 acres for about 388 000 dollars averaging just over 21 dollars per acre. Gulf Oil Company placed the top bid at 30 000 dollars for 240 acres in Lea County about 125 dollars per acre.

Wade Gunn Buried Sunday in Portales Rites Held Here
Funeral services for Thomas Wade Gunn aged 43 were held in Smith-Yarbro Chapel with Rev. E. E. Hamilton officiating. Interment followed in Portales. Gunn died from a gunshot wound at Gunn Motor Supply in Lovington on December 23. A coroner's jury ruled the death accidental pending investigation. Gunn is survived by his widow Anita French and two sons Able and Bill, along with his parents, siblings, and four sisters. The weapon found was a 38 caliber Super Colt, believed jammed as Gunn attempted to free it when it discharged.

Calf Struck by Car Outside Denver City Limits
A calf was hit by a car at 2:59 a.m. Christmas Eve just outside Denver City limits. Otis Haley of the state police investigated the incident. The vehicle was a 1954 turquoise Chevrolet driven by 20 year old Dale Lambert and owned by L. C. Reed of Denver City.
