Roswell resident Harry Dallas recalls homesteading between Caprock and Tatum in 1910. He describes infrequent trading, Christmas dances, lamps and prairie coal, early Lovington growth, and social life of young homesteaders. Dallas became a deacon after joining Soldier Hill Baptist Church and later moved to Roswell following a divorce.

Martin Rites Held For Richard L. Martin In Hobbs

Funeral services for Richard Lee Martin age 51 were held yesterday at Green Chapel with Linwood Bishop of the Church of Christ presiding. Burial followed at Memory Gardens. Born August 17 1903 in Zion Arkansas he came to Hobbs in 1945 and worked for James Oil Well Service. Survived by sister Mrs Lula Berry of Tuckerman Arkansas.

The Lovington Lutheran Church at 324 W. Ave will hold a special candlelight service Friday at 10 a.m. Pastor Emil Krugler will conduct the service and lead congregational singing of traditional Christmas carols.

Lea County collectors office in Lovington sent delinquent tax notices on December 17. The local office faced a rush from taxpayers before December 1, but many remained delinquent, according to the report.

Woman Found Dead in Hobbs Home After Eleven Days

Mrs. Jessie Cooper Hathaway was discovered dead at 807 W. Dunham Hobbs Wednesday morning after an eleven day absence. Coronary jury ruled natural causes. Survivors include nieces cousins and siblings in Texas and New Mexico. Funeral services were held at Griffin Chapel with Linwood Bishop officiating. Burial followed at Prairie Haven.

Lovington and Lea County enter a two day holiday period with schools and courthouses closed. Businesses halt operations and many residents depart for Christmas or stay home with family. churches plan holiday services and lighting displays. County jail inmates will receive a Christmas dinner with extras.

Tatum Deputy Resigns. Wayne Carter to Replace

Deputy Tom White of Tatum has resigned and will be replaced by Wayne Carter, a member of the Hobbs Police. Sheriff Jewell McAdoo announced the change. White will move back to Hobbs to enter private business.
