Labor Secretary James Mitchell denounces right to work laws in a CIO speech in Los Angeles. He says 17 states have these laws which unduly curb collective bargaining and union security, arguing they do not create jobs and do more harm than good.
Pope Pius the twelfth approved a decree to begin sainthood steps for his predecessor Pius the Ninth. The process follows a century of his rule and a celebrated Marian devotion era in Rome. The pontiff, 78, shows slight improvement after a five day collapse as Vatican sources report. The year of Mary ends with a Latin benediction broadcast.
Lea County taxpayers owe 1 percent interest on delinquent taxes overdue December 1 1954. The treasurer reports 1 022 891 93 dollars collected so far this year starting November 1, with a total tax roll for 1954 amounting to 2 063 335 57 dollars.
Six would be assassins linked to the Moslem Brotherhood were hanged in Cairo for their attempt on Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser. The executions followed last Saturday’s convictions and included men who prayed or asked forgiveness as they faced the gallows. Nasser refused clemency despite pleas from Syria’s Premier.
Bill Gore of Lovington attends his mother Mrs G G Gore's funeral at Crescent Hill Church of Christ in Brownfield. The 72 year old widow died Wednesday morning after a five year illness from a fall that caused a broken hip. Survivors include six sons, four daughters, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
South Korean President Syngman Rhee warned at a news conference that his army may attack the Communists alone after a prior pledge to cooperate with the United States. He said the Reds are preparing a new offensive against South Korea amid renewed aid from the United States.

Lovington prepares a three game weekend starting Thursday against St Mike's Horsemen. The B team opens the action against the freshmen before Portales visits Friday with the B team also playing. Saturday the Wildcats travel to Tatum to face the Coyotes with Coach Cozzens sticking to the Eunice starting lineup of Bevers Dawking Cates Shivers and Black.
Lovington Jr High Kittens meet Eunice Jr High Saturday at 2 PM in the local gym. The event features a freshmen game afterward and marks Lovington’s first outside competition after a season opening loss at Tatum.
The city will install 50 additional parking meters around the courthouse square, bringing total meters to 264 from 214. New meters expected in about 30 days per City Hall report.
