Only one formal applicant for the Tatum town clerk post remains Mrs W Matthews longtime resident. Filing deadline 5 pm May 1 with new council to meet that night. Eisenhower says H bomb tests go ahead as scheduled while Khrushchev warns of missiles and disarmament debates continue.
A March financial statement for Lea General Hospital Hobbs shows a fund balance of 3634.98 with total assets of 1 080 486 98 and liabilities of 37 984 98. Operating income for March was 5920 37 ending in the black while nine month totals show net income of 354 490 80 from professional care and X ray services. The report lists 450 adult discharges 1015 patient days 88 newborn discharges 292 newborn days 10 deaths and 533 non admitted emergencies reflecting meals served and costs per meal at 71 cents.
Architect George Graves of Hobbs outlines expansion options for the Lea County Courthouse in Lovington. He has met with office holders and county commissioners and will submit a detailed sketch. A proposed feature adds an outside sheriff entrance to lock the building after hours, reducing custodian costs while keeping one court house door open 24 hours.
Lovington City Commission passes a tentative budget of 339 280 for 1956 57 with plan to seek state tax board approval. Key allocations include water 248 700 police 68 050 recreation 18 506 and sanitation 35 000. Purchases planned include a street grader 17 000 and new police autos while water department capital outlay totals 67 900.
County Commissioner J. R. Wycoff of Hobbs announces Knowles Road will be caliched to create a 10 foot wider right of way on both sides. The four mile section, also called the Ole Swimmin Hole Road, will be graded and packed with county equipment as area growth increases. Wind-blown dirt has left the surface bare, making caliche essential for grading.
A town budget of 100 065 dollars is expected to be approved by Tatum officials when they meet May 1. The plan shows an 8 000 rise from last year with no major improvements or capital outlay. Town clerk Beatrice Green cites higher costs across the board as the reason.
City Manager J W Harrison warned at Tuesday’s commission meeting that plumbing laws will be strictly enforced. He said recent plumbing work was below specifications and that the city will call in the state if necessary. The city takes responsibility only after inspection and will get tough about it.
State Comptroller Dan Smith says the State Board of Finance will likely meet only if urgent needs arise after the primary. No plans for a May 10th or 11th meeting unless required, in Santa Fe. Senator Calvin Horn of Bernalillo County had urged an April session.
Bob Moates was elected president of the Eunice Chamber of Commerce with Will McCasland as vice president and John Hallmark as secretary. Directors include Paul Wallach and others. the outgoing president remains ex officio. Installation is May 4 at 7 p.m. in Eunice High School Cafeteria.
In New Britain Connecticut Mrs Mary H Boilard becomes police matron after Mrs Harry A Heck resigns. Boilard is Heck’s daughter and steps into the family succession in the city police role.
M A Mike Dunaway a 48 year old Hobbs resident and owner of Dunaway Rig and Transport died Monday evening after a heart attack at a local hospital. He moved to Hobbs 21 years ago and was active in the First Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge. Funeral services set for 10 AM Thursday at First Methodist with burial in Memory Gardens.
Ida Ann Collum of Brownfield formerly of Tatum died after a heart attack Thursday in Whitney Texas and was buried in Brownfield Monday afternoon. Survived by six children including Bill Collum Whitney and Glen Collum Brownfield, with numerous Lovington Gladiola and Tatum relatives attending the funeral.
Mrs Geraldine Simpson and her son Robert have moved from Tatum to Paris Texas to live with her mother. Her mother-in-law Lula Simpson Ada Odell and G. L. Floyds family visited them in early April.
Out-of-court agreement ends a three-year fight over the 23 room mansion linked to W. P. Clarke when he was shot in 1953. Mary Clark may live there for life, receives furnishings, and drops claims against the estate while the mansion’s title remains with the estate.
Feldman Oil & Gas Co of Dallas reports cementing 53 inch casing to 12,078 feet at No 1 Federal Lea County prospect 27-11s-38e five miles northeast of Gladiola. A test was plugged back to the Pennsylvanian and a confirmation logged additional pay.
Two traffic accidents near Lovington on Highway 18 caused injuries and property damage. Billy Ray Parson of Midland Texas suffered injuries in a collision with a Dodge pulling a trailer driven by E E Allman of Hobbs. Parson's injuries were not serious and no charges were filed. Earlier a Ford pickup collided with a Buick at S Love Street causing minor damage, with no citations issued.
Ed Runnels named chairman as sixteen growers form the Lea County Vegetable Growers. Dallas and Waco buyers will attend a 7 30 p m meeting Friday April 27 at the Lea County Electric Cooperative building. Possible canner and frozen fruit plant for Lovington discussed with speakers John King Bill Wiltbank and John Durkin.
Four defendants pleaded guilty in District Court on Tuesday morning. Glen Earl Thomas 21 was sentenced to one to 99 years for statutory rape. Earl R. Benford 24 received a suspended sentence for issuing bogus checks. William L. McDavid 26 faced one year for failure to support children. Jerry Dan Carter 20 of Eunice received deferred sentencing for forgery until Friday.
Lyons Neb. city council ordered mesh wire around trees in Lyons City Park after beavers caused extensive damage to the trunks and branches. Work aims to protect remaining trees and prevent further bark damage in the park.
Oil company Deece plans tubing and production packer work at No 1 Kelly State in east Lea County. A drillstem test produced surface gas and water briefly then oil, with tanks receiving 115 barrels in 40 minutes and 32.68 barrels in 15 minutes. Subsequent 30 minute flows yielded multiple oil barrels through varying chokes with 120 barrels recovered. Location is 560 feet from section lines in 15s e.
E. G. Minton has moved to Lovington to head the Lea County re charge program. He formerly worked for the state engineer office and is now retained by the county to lead the effort.
The State Board of Education in Santa Fe approved 11 bond issues across New Mexico including Gadsden Independent Schools Santa Fe City Albuquerque Carlsbad Hobbs Lovington Las Vegas Artesia Clovis Bernalillo and Bloomfield They also approved a vocational agriculture department at Dulce new rehabilitation centers at Roswell and Las Cruces and a driver education program by Louis Mackel plus employment and certification standards for school nurses.
A Wednesday 3 p.m. Courthouse meeting will include health authorities from Santa Fe to discuss the new county Health Center to be built in Lovington on West Jefferson St. Dr Leland and others from Santa Fe are expected. Hobbs architect George Graves will join to review the first nurses home sketch near Lea County Hospital at Hobbs with 3 000 to 4 000 square feet.
