Lovington residents and neighbors are invited Sunday April 22 from 2:00 to 5:30 PM to tour the Community and Youth Center. Rotary Club funded the project started in 1946 and will seek funds later to equip the building. The hall is eighty four by thirty feet with a kitchen, restrooms, coat room, reading room and reception area.
H. C. Pannell Lovington schools and Charles R. Mills Hobbs schools were panel interrogators at the April regional education conference in New Orleans. Also attending were Lovington Junior High principal Larry Crouse and numerous New Mexico educators discussing coordination of public education and twelve month school programs.
Dr. and Mrs. R. E. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tomlinson host the Roundup Dance Saturday night at the Bull Barn. Turner's orchestra will play for dancing.
Mrs. Bill Anderson returned to Lovington after visiting in Lubbock where Mrs. Dick Lee lies in Lubbock Memorial hospital with a broken hip from a fall on the Lovington First Baptist Church steps on April 8. Mrs. Lee is reported as doing as well as expected.
J D Doran of Rt 1 Lovington NM was named to the American Hereford Association roster based in Kansas City. The March addition brings membership to 18 038 with breeders in every state and a record 426971 purebred calves registered last year. White faced calves accounted for nearly three times the total registrations of other beef breeds.
Lea County collector Jonh Shea in Hobbs received a March letter from the New Mexico Commissioner of Revenue stamped with an April 23 meter date. It remains unclear whether Shea opened it or plans to wait until the later date.
All Lovington school children took standardized achievement tests on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Tests are annual, given at the start and toward the end of the school year to measure progress.
Mrs. Rose Dollee had her farm gasoline permit revoked and suspended after dyed gasoline was found in her car. Hearing in Hobbs led by Supervising Auditor Herman D Bailey noted rebate misuse and potential penalties of 500 to 1000 dollars and one to two years in prison.
Officials announce a feeders day meeting in Clovis on April 21 sponsored by New Mexico A M College Extension Service. W E Flint will chair a day of talks at 9 am in the Clovis stockyards 4 D ring with exhibits and farm visits including Cattle Feeding Results in 1951 and factors affecting gain carcass quality.
Chief State Tax Commissioner Fred W. Moxey sets five regional conferences with county taxing officials to discuss recent legislation. On April 17 a meeting will be held in Roswell with Lea County officials invited and notices mailed to county clerks commissioners assessors and treasurers.
W. H. Woozie Wilder departed Thursday for Tulsa on a business trip.
Seven teams have entered the girls intermurals at Hobbs High for bowling. Prizes include a loving cup for second, a trophy for first in team series, a plaque for third, and separate awards for high individual series and high game. A consolation medal goes to the low score.
Parents of pupils enrolling for the first time in Lovington Schools are urged to contact the school nurse before May first. A clinic for beginners is planned for May 8 and 9 in the Junior High Building. names must be submitted by May 8. Birth certificates are required and vaccination rules apply for smallpox and diphtheria.
Hobbs City commission screened two army created training films on rats after the regular meeting. The first film traced the rat life cycle and potential for rapid reproduction. the second detailed disease transmission and rat damage to food, poultry, and garbage.
Lea County commissioners heard a petition from Pitchfork community asking no liquor license for a bar at the state line on Bledsoe highway and referred it to the Department of Liquor Control. Fire chief A L Connor and rancher Harry Houston sought higher Hobbs department funding due to rural calls. Aldridge outlined courthouse air conditioning options, and the panel planned a meeting with the State Tax Commission in Roswell on April 17 before adjourning at 2 p.m.
Farmers intending to produce certified seed must file crop inspection applications by specific deadlines May 1 for small grains June 15 for alfalfa and grasses and sudan August 1 for beans cotton broomcorn grain sorghums millet and cane. Late filings incur penalties or may be rejected and the NM Crop Improvement Association aims to reduce burdens from inspections. New Mexico produced 64 percent of the nation’s certified sweet sudan seed last year and must increase output to meet demand.
Mrs Frank Chaddick hosted the Gulf Bridge and Canasta club regular meeting Tuesday night at her home. High bridge score was won by Mrs Harold Wagnon and high canasta by Mrs Ray Wernsing. Seated were members Harold Hanson Johnny Keen Ted Blackman Manrow Cecil Stoops Delmer Woods Sam Gover Fred Niccum and H L Sprague. Guests were Mrs Jack Deunsen ing and Mrs Virginia Holly.
A Push-mobile Derby will be held in front of Lovington School on Saturday April 21 at 2 p.m. Cub den entries feature drivers and four pushers racing torpedo styled, color trimmed mobiles with Den 7 Den 4 Den 1 Den 5 Den 9 and Den 2 fielding teams. Judges include Hobday Gann John Campbell and Joe Price with Yorrell Harris in charge of awards. The event showcases old barrel and wagon wheel builds and coordinated cheer sections from each Den.
