A reader urges spraying mulberry trees with a lead lime sulfur mix to curb Messy fruit as the county weighs preservation of the trees. The clipping notes Mrs John Catchings of Humber City sent in the tip and fears trees may be cut down.
Lawton Oil Corp and W L Goldston report No 11A State discovery in central west Lea County five miles south of the Saunders Field. The well shows 336 barrels daily of 42 gravity oil with no water after perforations at 10 577 to 10 617 feet. Discovery lies 16 miles northeast of Lovington with top Pennsylvanian at 10 212 feet. Additional wells include Tide Water Associated Oil Co No 1 PD State with 767 barrels daily and 43.8 gravity oil, perforated near Strawn lime. Locations are given, plus core and test data for several fields across Roosevelt and Lea Counties.
The Club Scout Push-Mobile Derby will be held Saturday April 21 in the three blocks in front of Lovington Schools at 2 PM. Each Cub Scout Den may enter one pushmobile with one driver and four relay pushers. Judges are Jack Danglade John Campbell and Joe Price. Yorrell Harris leads the awards.
Mr and Mrs Dick McLaughlin hosted Mrs McLaughlin's grandmother and aunt from New York City as they plan a for April stay in Lovington during their visit.
The April docket lists actions including two divorce cases Fannie Harris versus Cleo Harris and Frank F Gray versus Mary Jane Gray for incompatibility, several property and title suits in Hobbs Lovington and New Hobbs additions, and a foreclosure along with multiple traffic and custody matters. Also filed are State Engineer versus R E Heidel to stop irrigation from two wells drilled without permit and declare rights of parties.
Southern Union Gas expands in Lovington with a 7 inch main to a new Electric Co op power plant. Two and a half miles of pipe and five extensions totaling about 1500 feet have been added. Diesel engines will use 10 to 11 cubic feet per hour per horsepower. two 1,600 horsepower diesels already operate, a third soon, and a 3,500 horsepower engine to be installed. Prices are up seasonally but overall bills are lower in winter.
Mrs Allen Bailey, residing in Louisiana, is visiting the home of Mr and Mrs Bill Bailey.
Mrs. Dick Lee fractures her hip after a fall on the steps of the First Baptist Church in Lovington. She was hospitalized at Lubbock Memorial hospital the first of last week for treatment.
Discussion of Mexican nationals for farm labor dominated the Lea County Farm Bureau board meeting. D. E. Taylor was named bureau agent to travel to El Paso and recruit Mexican laborers, with R. E. Willingham assisting. They reported three days in El Paso without success, hoping surplus workers from other districts become available. Thirty four farmers posted the usual $25 bond per laborer, while more farmers offered to post bonds when workers are obtained. Roy Lee will handle employer liability insurance through Lovington county bureau office.
Farmers finishing contract labor for a day or more should notify the Farm Bureau office at Lovington. L. G. Caudill says 34 farmers with Mexican labor bonds cannot obtain workers, so no pay is needed while idle. If possible, give a week’s notice to have a place ready. short notice is welcome.
Carl Howard from New Mexico A and M in Las Cruces visited Lovington on Thursday and Friday to review two student teachers, B A Vigil and Dan Lucero, who have completed three weeks and will remain for three more.
Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce directors plan to urge county commissioners and the state highway department to build a road to the Lea County line into Jal. The state earlier conducted a preliminary survey of the proposal. Jal residents and Oilfield community members have long urged a direct link to Carlsbad.

Patrick Evans of Hobbs public information officer invites new CAP members from Lovington and beyond. The unit at the old Army Air base offers radio and flight training with free ground instruction and a two week camp in Albuquerque costing 15 dollars, with half funded by the local group and the cadet to raise the rest. Meetings are Tuesdays at the base ramp with films and refreshments.
