Lovington TV Center plans a formal opening on Saturday April first with free registration on Friday and Saturday for a chance to win a $209.95 television. The center owned by Sam and Mrs. Privett, former Brownfield TV staff, will offer sales and service at 713 Main.
Seventh grader Wayne Westbrook of Jal schools won the Lea County Traffic Safety Commission slogan contest with Safe Driving Is No Accident. More than 2,000 submissions were narrowed by a blind judging panel from Lea, Lovington, and Hobbs areas. 25 percent of 7800 pupils participated. Wayne receives a lifetime fountain pen engraved with his name. Lester Hughes sues C. C. Webb for 381.11.
The C and W Office Supply in Lovington announces a formal opening this Friday and Saturday. Attendees may register for a free Royal Portable Typewriter drawing at 6 pm Saturday. The store, east side of the square, sells desks filing cabinets and office furniture with over 30 Royal and other typewriters plus exclusive agencies for Royal and Clary adding machines in local counties.
Lea County farmers press Lovington Leader publisher on irrigation well permits as 400 plus applications exist and 65 approved by March 27. Reviews show permits clustered in sparsely drilled areas, with Lawrence case near Knowles and Pauls Bar stirring debate over legality and timing of decisions.
Earl Brogdon an oil field worker who was found March 3 on the Lovington highway with burning clothes underwent surgery and remains in Lea County Hospital. Conflicting reports from sheriff and state attorney accompany the high profile case once headlines nationwide.

A five million dollar Lovington refinery project stalls due to lack of water even as Atlantic Refinery Co. offers to transfer or buy well permits. State engineer reportedly rejected three well options, one due to township rules and others not yet issued or in different townships. The Lovington Chamber heard the update Monday night at the REA building with only a small turnout.
The Lovington airport site five miles from town on state land in section 16 south range 35 east received approval from Lea County Commissioners after the CAA endorsed it. If land use cannot be agreed, condemnation may follow, with county funds of 37,000 dollars eyed for development though federal aid remains uncertain due to a reduced federal budget.

The Red Cross needs 150 dollars to reach its quota in Levington as volunteers plan a Saturday clean up and fundraising effort to match the town’s 2160 dollar goal. A fire department call on Tuesday at noon stopped a blaze in a small outhouse north of the Liano Hotel. the interior was gutted.
Hobbs Country Club faces a property tax dispute with Tax Assessor Roy L. Tatum. A district court suit seeks tax exemption as a charitable educational institution, while Tatum contends the club owes back taxes dating to its 1951 formation.
