Lovington town trustees meet on April 8 to swear in new officials and approve the next month. Receipts for March totaled 11 025 38 with expenditures 10 620 35 leaving a 405 03 surplus. Police move from the sheriff s department to the town hall library quarters, awaiting more room and better operation.
March fines in Lovington totaled 1568.00 with 128 for over parking and 1440 for offenses including three drunk drivers five reckless drivers four for disorderly conduct two for failure to yield six for blocking driveways four traffic violations four no licenses plates two no drivers licenses and two speeding. Custody ruling awarded to Fred Holmes for eight year old Donald Lee Holmes after a habeas corpus hearing before District Judge John R. Brand.
An April marriage duo in New Mexico ends with vows renewed on April Fool's Day. A Arkansas man and Texas woman split en route to Kermit after refusing a blood test. Lovington voters oust long time magistrate John W. Green by 16 votes, electing L. C. Green as town leader while Jack Underwood wins the mayoral race. Numerous write ins and split results fill the rest of the ballot.
In a meeting at Lea Co Electric Co-operative building the Little League outlined plans for a strong season with May 1 practice. President Elmer Winte led the discussion as officers and 12 board members were re elected. The group has about 100 to start and seeks donations from parents and local business people through Winte or committee members.
A 16 year old Negro youth, Edgar Carter Jr., was placed in the county jail Tuesday night after officers were alerted to shots fired at the Hill by Mrs. Dorothy Lee Marriott who reported someone was shooting.
The town will occupy a former residence donated by Mr. and Mrs. D M Denton at West Central and First Street for a public library. Workers redecorate the house and build new concrete features. The town commits 500 dollars for repairs with the library supplying the remainder.
State sale of oil and gas leases yielded 859,927.26 with 542,562.27 from sealed bids and 317,100.00 from auction tracts. Texas Co paid 169,333.33 for 483.69 acres in Central Lea County at 350 per acre. Notable bids included John M. Kelly at 257.50 per acre totaling 10,300. A C Holder bought tract No 7 for 23,040 and 24,424 for tract No 6 before Bernice R. Pratt outbid at 49,772.80. W G Ross bid two tracts in Lea County for 107,000.
Two firearms were returned to Harvey Wise by a district court order on Tuesday April 6. Savage rifle and Colt pistol were listed as Wise's though reports suggest the guns belonged to another party. Wise, jailed, had appealed his breaking and entering conviction which was upheld by the state Supreme Court.
Southern California Petroleum Corp announces a 15 well program on Langlie Mattix field leases in Lea County New Mexico. Wells in Queen sandstone zone will reach about 3500 feet, spacing one per 40 acres under oil conservation rules. First two tests produced about 200 barrels daily each of 42 gravity oil.
The town dog catcher reports 78 of 91 dogs caught in March were destroyed. This raises total dogs killed to 211 across February and March.
United Press reports about 55000 New Mexicans will receive federal income tax refunds by mid May. Internal Revenue collector Steve Vidal states 52000 have already been mailed and the process should finish by mid May. Checks are sent at about 2000 per week.
March cigarette tax brought in 996.41, about 300 to 400 dollars below typical months. Disbursements from the cigarette tax fund to the Youth Center reached 1,120.50 with an outstanding balance of 4,531.74 remaining.
Mayor Ed Holt, also County Commissioner, was re elected without opposition in Tatum village. A tie produced 53 votes for Gilbert Pfeifer and Hugh H Markham for two year trustee. Pfeifer may concede. court action possible. Mrs Joe James reelected trustee with 77 votes. F D Hurley unopposed for four years with 90 votes. Frank Wyckoff village magistrate led with 96 votes and was unopposed. Holt totaled 84 votes.
Mary L Rowan died April 4 in Hollywood California. Born October 14, 1954 she was the first owner of the Lucy Lee Dress Shop, now the Fashion Shop. Survived by husband William J Rowan son David Lynn five sisters and multiple relatives. Services at Smith-Yarbro Chapel at 2 pm April 8 with Pastor David Moore officiating. interment Lovington Cemetery.
Building permits have slowed to an almost stop. The Girl Scouts secured a permit for 1001 West Park to build a scout hut valued at 10 000. J W Henderson at 1001 West Madison seeks 5 000 for a residence. Al Savisky of 702 South 2nd Hillcrest aquirin garage 750. O L Greer 114 West Monroe applies for 5 000 residence. Rebecca Graham 322 South Ist requests 2 000 addition.
The Southeastern District hosts an open AA meeting at the Lovington Youth Center at 2 p m on Sunday April 11. Lovington and Hobbs groups invite the public to attend with questions about alcoholism, promising an enlightening program.
Mrs. Donna Davis of Antioch Tennessee credited a recent first aid course for saving T Sg t Leonard Schmidt of Cleveland Ohio after a wreck on the road. She stopped bleeding and drove him to a Nashville hospital. they married the following Saturday at Stewart Air Force Base chapel. The sergeant said it was love at first sight.
A grant of 475875 dollars will aid Highlands University chemistry professor Dr. Roland K. Robins in research to halt cancer tumor growth. The American Cancer Society funds his work on cell growth and material to stop cancer spread. Robins notes the project has good possibilities and cites New Mexico as a potential source of breakthroughs.
The state's traffic toll rose to 109 for the year surpassing the 1953 pace. David Ospie Ramirez 22 of Alamogordo died when his car rolled south of Alamogordo on US 54. Henry Savoie 25 of Artesia died in a vehicle out of control north of Artesia on state road 83. Herman Barnes 24 died when his car left a bridge embankment near Albuquerque rupturing a gas line valve.
Lara Bell Mandress granted divorce from Alvin Mandress with name restoration to Smith. Beatrice Rhodes granted divorce from B F Rhodes. Beva Lou Hall awarded divorce from Vernon L Hall with custody of two children. Carl Phillips divorced from Maye Phillips.
The first softball meeting of the season is announced for Monday night at the Lianod Hotel. Hank Hazen invites anyone interested in softball to attend and consider managing sponsoring or forming a team.
The Artesia Baseball team and Artesia Chamber of Commerce travel in the Longhorn League goodwill trip to Tatum Lovington and Hobbs on April 14. They depart Tatum at 1 35 for Lovington and leave Lovington at 2 15 for Hobbs with a police escort meeting at town edge to guide them into the city.
Six year old Jimmy Lynn Trammel of 1114 West Harrison rode into the side of a car driven by Colene Padget Young at 1205 West Madison. He suffered no injuries and was unhurt in the accident.
Howard Williams received 4 1 2 to 5 1 2 years in the state pen for check fraud tied to a $15 cashing at Owl Bar. Thelma Walker drew 1 to 2 years after cashing a $30 check in Levington, with prior 1949 Rockwell City time. James Davis pleads not guilty on assault. self defense cited.
