Congress rejects the President's plan to fund 140000 public housing units over four years while approving eased home loan terms for displaced slum dwellers and increased liberal federal support for low cost housing repairs and slum clearance. GOP leaders say the President can still back about 35000 units in the coming year.
The International Union of Electrical Workers leads a CIO drive for a guaranteed annual wage for 46,000 Westinghouse employees. The demand seeks a higher wage baseline, larger pensions, and better benefits, currently averaging $25 an hour.
Petra Sanghiz 35 who moved from Artesia to Lovington three years ago died early Saturday after a week in hospital for extensive liver damage. Survived by husband Roman Sanghiz. Remains sent to Artesia for burial in Catholic cemetery.
New York Lovington Citizens Committee chair Mrs William A Anderson is named consultant for the Fifth Annual Citizens Assembly on Education in March 1920 at the Fairmont Hotel San Francisco under the National Citizens Commission for the Public Schools. The two day event gathers more than 1500 school board members and leaders to advance public school improvement. Beardsley Ruml and Walter Lippman slated as principal speakers at the assembly dinner.
The 51st annual Southeast New Mexico A&M Club Muster will be held April 21 at 7 50 p m in the Women’s Civic Club building Hobbs to honor Aggies who have passed and to salute Texans who won independence at San Jacinto. Edward Wendt, club president, will be master of ceremonies inviting all A&M alumni and friends to attend this traditional observance.
Private Ernst E Dowellsen son of Mr and Mrs Ernest C Dowell of Hobbs New Mexico arrived in Germany to serve with the 91st Anti Artillery Battalion of the Seventh Army. He enlisted last September after graduating from Hobbs High School in 1952 and working at the Pueblo Ordnance Depot.
A Texas district court writ of habeas corpus seeks custody for four year old Darrel Wade Brown. Father Dorman Wade Brown alleges his wife Nancy Warrick Brown obtained a Dallas divorce in 1950 and that custody was given to the Warricks. He claims the couple later lived as a common law family in Texas until their 1951 separation and that Nancy may have remarried Bill Telbert in 1954. A hearing was set for 9 a.m. today to decide temporary custody while the case proceeds.
John Earl Morrow 63 died Saturday in a Hobbs hospital after 10 years’ residence there and 29 years at Continental Oil. He lived at 511 W Park and leaves wife Laura Mae four daughters two sisters two brothers and a son. He was a World War I veteran and First Assembly of God member. Interment Memory Gardens Cemetery Monday at 2 30 PM with Rev Raymond Hudson officiating.
The Lions Club held a regular session with John Shearman as speaker. He outlined requirements for obtaining irrigation and domestic wells in Lea County. The group supports Bernard Love for Deputy District Governor and discussed regional club visits and upcoming trips to Carlsbad.

The Hobbs Army reserve unit relocates to 110 East Dunam with shared access for Air Forces and Navy reserve in the same building. Lt. Col. Lynn L. Bowin says the new site offers better operation setup while Col. Harold E. Massey notes training facilities will be available to all services. Training begins September 1 for five years with classrooms and field work, under the unit commander and adjutant. Interested officers are asked to contact Lt. Col. Massey or Capt. Strauss.
Veterans of World War I World War II or the Korean Conflict totaling permanent total disability may qualify for a monthly pension of 63 then 75 after ten years at age 65. Frank M Quitana VA representative will be in Hobbs New Mexico April 13 1954 at the Employment Service Office 511 East Broadway 9:30 to 3:30 to assist veterans dependents and representatives with veterans benefits beyond the pension.
Secretary of State Dulles told the House affairs committee the administration seeks 3.5 billion dollars in foreign aid. He warned that Red China could trigger a broader Asia war if it pressures Indochina, and urged unity of will and action to meet the communist threat. Senate critic Gillette urged backing full Indochinese independence and UN action. Reports place fresh Communist forces en route to Bien Phu, potentially swelling Giap’s army to 40,000 with heavy French losses at the fortress.

Fisher notes a light vote, L C Green campaigns with support, incumbent John W Green appears unconcerned, trustees to meet near the 8th to organize the new leadership, Mayor Robinson will preside for the last time before Jack Underwood takes over.
