Three farm leaders from Colorado Oklahoma Kansas and New Mexico press Ezra Benson for urgent drought relief after a National Farmers Union meeting. They accuse the Agriculture Department of a do nothing policy and warn of ruin to hundreds of farm families if action is not taken.
New fishing licenses are due April 1 after the old licenses expired March 31. Fishing is good in parts of the region with white bass crappie perch and brim reported on the Pecos. Licenses available in Lovington at Kemp Lumber Co and in Hobbs at the Army Store.
The Post Office Department will unveil its first regular stamp bearing the motto In God We Trust and depicting the Statue of Liberty. A ceremony on April 8, 1954 from 12 15 to 12 30 PM EST will be broadcast nationwide with President Eisenhower and other leaders present. The stamp is a symbol of opportunity, faith, and national identity designed to unite Americans and remind citizens of core beliefs.
Lea County commissioners will hold a routine meeting Monday. They will approve bills and payroll for county workers and let bids for primary ballots to the highest bidder, county clerk Miss Tatum said.

Howard Williams bound over to district court on charges of issuing a bad check to Owl Bar after a $15.00 check bounced. He pleaded guilty at arraignment April 1 before Justice of Peace John W. Green. Bond set at $500. next district court appearance April 6.
Voters in Lea County must register by 5 PM Monday April 5 to participate in the May primaries. Registration clerks will be posted at precincts across Lea County from 8 AM to 5 PM, including Lovington courthouse and various local stores and offices. Local drive led by the Jaycees aims to boost turnout amid purges reducing registered voters to near two years ago.
District Judge Roy C. Anderson of Carlsbad will speak at Booker T. Washington School Hobbs on Wednesday April 7. He will discuss juvenile delinquency with Justice of Peace Tom Finn and Col. Don Hallam of Hobbs as co speakers. The event aims to prevent delinquency among Negro youths and has seen little trouble in Hobbs colored section. All county residents are urged to attend.

On April 1 about 12 30 PM at the Washington and Fifth intersection a two vehicle crash left Mrs Shirley Betenbaugh 18 and Miss Alice May injured. Betenbaugh driving a Ford pickup and Miss May were taken to Lovington Hospital with internal injuries and facial cuts while Miss Mary Griffin escaped harm. D W R Cain 60 a Hesters Garage employee driving a 1947 Chevrolet sustained bruises and was treated at home. Charges for Betenbaugh include failure to yield right of way and operating without a license.
More than 100 people attended a grain sorghum meeting at the Youth Center on Friday night April 2. H. C. Hutchins outlined Community Credit loan rates of 2.16 for grain in farm storage and 2.04 for commercial storage and noted March 3 as the deadline to redeem grains in loan. Dr Royce Leamer of USDA spoke on fertilizer tests in Lea County and plant food sources. Dr M W Kramer from Texas A&M in Lubbock covered the regional history and recommended sorghum varieties for the southwest.
United Press reports Elmer Dolan, a suspended St. Louis policeman, convicted by a federal jury in Kansas City of perjury tied to handling ransom money in the Bobby Greenlease kidnapping. Half of the $600,000 remains missing. Dolan’s sentencing is postponed to April 15 as his attorney seeks a new trial.
A son was born to Corporal and Mrs. Floyd B. Quarles on March 22. The baby named Mark Lavoy weighed 8 pounds 14.2 ounces. Cpl Quarles serves in the armed forces and is stationed in San Francisco. He is a graduate of unspecified.
Local candidates anticipate a very light turnout in the town election. A C Holder Glen Werhan Hollis Smith seek trustee seats while L C Green runs for Town Magistrate. Incumbent John W Green shows little campaigning. Mayor race appears decided with Jack Underwood. Change to city status debated by new and current trustees.
Bobby Doyal stays in Lea County jail awaiting appeal to the State Supreme Court. He has two voluntary manslaughter sentences totaling thirteen years, with one ten year term and one three year term. The earlier 25 to 30 year murder sentence was withdrawn after a new trial issue arose.
Santa Fe notes municipal gasoline taxes rose by over 73000 statewide while 13 towns saw declines. Thirty six towns including Lovington collected 36 000, with Albuquerque at 230 000 up 17 percent. Other major totals: Gallup 75000 Hobbs 74500 Carlsbad 67500 Santa Fe 64700 Roswell 43600 Tucumcari 41500 Farmington 33500.
Martin Hughes of Hobbs indicted for tax evasion in 1947. Indictment cites a loss of 4956.68 while returns show income 15975.87 and tax due 4705.98. Bertram E Gieseke Jr and Henry T Schrantz Jr charged with transporting two Odessa women for prostitution. Hobbs case involves interstate transport of stolen property and mail obstrution from the Hobbs Post Office on December 5, 1953.
